Comment or Excerpt from fic: A wonderful, wonderful fic that began as a ten page one-shot, and grew out of control, according to the author. It charts Jack and Ianto's relationship, and their reactions to events on the show, as well as adding a few interesting side adventures for them to have. It contains a few cliches, as the author warns, but they are built into the story, and form valid plot points rather than just being cliches. It is very well researched, contains the occasional reference, and has solid characterization throughout. AND it gets Myfanwy's gender right ... you'll see what I mean. There is so much I love about this fic.

In honor of the snazzy new format and my self-appointed mission to start posting more recs, I wanted to give you my recently discovered new favorite. (Note to the admins- for some reason, when I attempted to get to the masterlist, the google.docs didn't want to let me in! Perhaps because I was logged into my personal gmail account? I dunno! This fic is absolutely BRILLIANT. It is very well written, and [livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot packs an emotional punch without becoming melodramatic. The premise for this fic centers around the glove and a "what-if Ianto had actually acted on his suicidal/depressed feelings" and is incredibly well-done; not something I'd ever thought of before. Everyone is fabulously in character- Ianto is the sad, stoic Ianto we saw from series 1, underestimated and unappreciated but resilient, Jack is the guilt-riddled immortal who feels both responsible for and flabbergasted by the people under his command- and the writing style is simple but fraught with implicit emotion and illumination of the characters. Morbidly funny, it takes They Keep Killing Suzie and turns it into a story I would have liked just as much, if not more (which is saying something, since TKKS is definitely in my top 3 Torchwood episodes). I can't say enough good things about this series; it completely floored me, intrigued me, and left me begging for more!

As the author writes, the title is taken from the suicide note of Charlotte Perkins Gilman: "Human life consists in mutual service. No grief, pain, misfortune, or 'broken heart,' is excuse for cutting off one's life while any power of service remains. But when all usefulness is over, when one is assured of an unavoidable and imminent death, it is the simplest of human rights to choose a quick and easy death in place of a slow and horrible one."

Summary: Ten years after the death of Ianto’s mother, he returns to her childhood home to say goodbye and to be himself, away from the dangers and secrecy of Torchwood, and away from the confusion that is his relationship with Jack.

Commentary: The idea of Ianto as one of the fairies' Choosen Ones isn't something new in fandom. What is new is the idea of Ianto as a fairy- a fairy lord, even. sparking_off's Ianto is a comflicted fellow, stranding between two very different worlds, both a which are frightening in their own way, not in the least because he loves them both. The writing style itself is very subtle and soothing, and sometimes nonlinear as well, as Ianto deals with the effects of things which to the reader have no cause. If you're a fan of strong Ianto or romantic Janto, this is a story for you.

Spence grinned, and opened the door. Ianto peered inside the brightly-lit room, wincing a little at the assault on his senses. It took him a moment to be able to see clearly, and once he could, he gasped out loud in astonishment at what he was seeing.

Inside the room was a man, huddled in a far corner of the room and watching them with wild eyes. He wore filthy sweatpants and a torn, dirty tee-shirt. His hair was long and shaggy — although, Ianto was curious to note that he had no beard or any other sign of facial hair — and there were manacles around his wrists and ankles, as well as what appeared to be a leather collar around his neck. Five separate chains kept him secured to the wall.

Ianto felt a rush of anger at the inhumanity of the sight before him. “Is this some sort of joke? Since when do we lock up humans?”

“This is no joke, Jones, and we don’t consider it to be human. Say hello to Torchwood’s longest surviving resident.”
