Title: Silent Running in Deep Waters
Author: [livejournal.com profile] choccy_grl
Genre:
AU, Romance, WW2, Action, Drama
Rating:
PG - NC17
Summary:
Disgraced American pilot Captain Jack Harkness starts again in a new country and a new service but will a young sonar operator make things easier or harder for Jack?
Status:
Complete
Length:
15 Chapters + Prologue and Epilogue (38,315 Words)
Warnings:
Brief mention of Jack/OFC (and suggested Jack/OFC/OMC) and Ianto/Lisa
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Very good AU that has nothing to do with Torchwood with a mortal Jack and Ianto in the second world war in a Royal Navy Submarine, you can imagine what happens lol. It's well written and has good pace, there's no rushing into things :). This is one of my favourite WW2 Jack/Ianto stories :D

Excerpt:

He shrugged on the coat that had been hanging over his arm - no-one would see it was an Air Force coat in the dark - and tugged the warm comforting material around him.  Sadly this would have to go into storage at his lodging house with most of the rest of his things; he’d miss the coat, it was almost like it was a part of him.  Taking one last glance at his new charge he turned and left the docks behind him.  He rounded the corner of one of the cargo units, head bowed against the wind; and impacted with something warm and solid.

Glancing up, he was just in time to see a figure step round him with a clear “Sorry, Sir” before the figure was swallowed up by the darkness out towards the harbour.  He’d barely seen the man, nothing really but shadow; yet still he was left with the lingering impression of blue grey eyes and a muttered ‘Like the coat’.

Title: Losing Ianto
Author: Otrame ([livejournal.com profile] otrame)
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort, romance
Warnings: Medical details, character death
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Ianto is desperately ill, but not even Doctor Owen Harper can figure out what is wrong or how to save Ianto. And Jack.
Commentary: [livejournal.com profile] otrameis someone whose fic stays over on Teaspoon, but is known there for writing some of the best romances. Part of the reason is her Jack is such a lover: he loves the Doctor, he loves Tosh, he loves Owen, he loves Gwen, and he loves Ianto, and each love is unique and not necessarily sexual. But, for the most part, her stories aren't fluff; they tend towards the dark side, and this particular one is no exception. Ianto is sick, dying, and no one is sure of the cause or the cure. This situation taxes Owen as a doctor, Jack as a lover, and Ianto as a person facing difficult choices to make- and there's more at stake here than his own life...

Title: Guard Them, and Him Within
Author: [livejournal.com profile] etharei
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Angst, Drama, Mystery, Time Travel
Warnings: ANGST, Violence
Status: Complete
Length: 38,000
Summary: Ianto Jones finds himself far from home. But there are guns, aliens, and more Strange Happenings than one can shake a stick at, so sometimes it’s like he hasn’t left. Of stories within stories, and the adventures of small characters.
Commentary: Ianto is transported 1,000 years into the future, where Jack is the Captain of a military base no one wants. I won't spoil you, but I have to say, for a fic written before CoE, it speaks to one of fandom's current big fears; the earlier chapters might be hard to read for this reason, but if you stick it out, you'll find it well worth the effort.

Title: Ianto's Diary
Author: [livejournal.com profile] szm
Rating: PG-15
Genre: Angst, Character Study
Status: Complete
Length: One-shot
Warnings: Character death, post-CoE
Spoilers: Through CoE
Summary: Jack finds and continues with Ianto's diary.
Commentary: This is one of the first post-CoE stories I read, and among the first to be written. It's angry, and greiving- and, as it's written from Jack's perspective, it rings completely true.

Title: Ring-a-Ring o' Roses
Author[personal profile] azure_chaos
Genre: Apocalyptic, angst, non-canon compliant
Summary: Jack always thought that the biggest threat to Earth was external. That’s why he policed the rift and watched Britain’s borders for alien threats. Unfortunately, no one saw this one coming from the inside. With almost the entire population of the world seemingly wiped out Jack discovers a surprise survivor. But if the apocalypse itself was bad, Jack knows that it’s really just the beginning and he will do anything to protect those he cares about.
Status: Complete
Length: Six Chapters + prologue, epilogue
Warnings: Action, Allusion to D/s, minor character death (no major character death).
Comment or Experpt from fic: This fic goes completely AU, ignoring the events of Exit Wounds and Children of Earth, Tosh and Owen are present. Rhys and Andy are included as well.

Title: Hourglass
Author: Lazuli Kat
Genre: Drama, Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Death is not the only form of loss.
Status: Complete
Length: Very long
Warning: Mental illness, character death
Comment: What if John Hart were exactly the sort of man everyone thought he was when he first appeared? What if Grey somehow got free in the Hub? What if after being buried alive, Jack came back with something? And how, on top of recovering from Tosh and Owen's death's, would Gwen and Ianto cope?

This is an AU after Series Two ended, and there is a very strong sense of "the end is where we start from" throughout this fic- the sense that despite all of Torchwood's losses, they'll somehow be able to recover. There is a plot, but most of the action centers around Jack and Ianto, and I think you'll find it a very satisfying read.

Title: Nortorious
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords
Genre: Action/Adventure, Suspense, Thriller
Rating: NC-17
Summary: An homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious, 1940s melodrama/suspense. Ianto goes undercover. Jack reacts.
Status: Complete
Length: 12,000 words in two parts
Warnings: Ianto/OFC
Comment: Ianto is remarkable for many reasons, but one thing that has always stood out in the minds of many fans is how easily he was able to con his way into a position in Torchwood Three- as well as a position in Jack's life. He conned the con-man, and that takes skills. This fic is wonderful because it not only showcases those skills, but Jack's reactions to watching someone else succumb to them.
Excerpt from fic:
“This castle is quite lovely, though I imagine it would be extremely hard to heat in the winter, what with all of the concealed nooks and crannies,” she said.

How subtle, Jack’s voice sounded in his ear. “It is, at that. Still, we wouldn’t want our Castle any other way, I’m sure. Ianto Jones,” he proffered his hand. “I’m with the Welsh Tourism Board.”

She laughed a little tinkly laugh and took his hand. “Alexandra Sebastian. I dabble in antiques – restoration, procurement, that sort of thing.” Her hand was soft but her grip was hard.

Title: And Indeed There Will Be Time
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mystery
Rating: R
Summary: In 1919, Harriet Derbyshire was killed while investigating the disappearance of Torchwood Four in Dublin. In 2009, UNIT pulls a dying man out of the Irish Sea with a one-word message: Torchwood. Martha joins up with Jack's team in Cardiff to track down the errant branch of the organization – before a time-traveling race of aliens can change the course of history as we know it.
Status: Complete
Length: 43,000 words
Warnings: None
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is an amazing story. The plot is a wonderfully twisty time-travel mystery, with aliens and paradoxes and cross-time clues. All the characters are really well-done, and especially Martha and Mickey get a chance to shine. The author does a really good job guiding the reader through the complex plot and has also created some truly spectacular original characters. It's also a marvelous Jack/Ianto story, showing their relationship as strong and trusting. One of the best all-around pieces of Torchwood fan fiction I've read.

Title: Torchwood One Archive
Author: James aka [livejournal.com profile] zortified (Writing journal: [livejournal.com profile] gilascave)
Genre: Angst, Drama, Crossover
Rating: PG-15
Summary: Jack has returned to Torchwood and to Ianto. Ianto is determined to make the best of it but he knows it won't last forever. Their time together threatens to get even shorter when the Doctor shows up unexpectedly.
Status: Complete
Length: 11,500 words
Warnings: None
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a good, solid, plotty story. The characters are well-done, and I was especially pleased to see Jack and Ianto interacting like the emotionally awkward men they both are, and equally pleased to see them acting so physically comfortable with each other. Theirs is an odd and difficult relationship to capture, and I think this story does it very well. In addition, the story itself is interesting and engaging and has a fascinating premise. It's also the kind of story that you'll really want to read twice, just to admire the new layers of meaning that show up on the second read. Really well done.

Title: Drug!Ianto 'Verse
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] skellerbvvt
Genre:  angst, power struggle, dark, drama, humor
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: Ianto is the bait and the trap, Torchwood's last defense against the Time Lord threat
Status: Incomplete, Series
Warnings: Everything. No, really. Everything. See tags for more info.
Comment: There aren't really the words for how disturbed this fic is. No, really, there are none. The TARDIS is sociopathic. Jack is broken. The Master is manic. The Doctor is manic. And Ianto is the drug they're all addicted to. And yet- you can't look away. You can't help but laugh. And you're never sure which way this fic will go. The fic itself is as addicting as Ianto.

The first part is Trapped Inside With You. Proceed with caution.

Title: First Time for Everything
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] criccieth
Genre:  backstory, angst, drama, ect
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: All relationships have their stages and their first moments
Status: Incomplete, looooong
Warnings: Sex, domestic abuse, suicide attempts
Comment: This isn't the sort of background I normally buy for Ianto, but the details and emotions are so vivid here that it's hard not to buy it. The story is shaping up to be complicated and full of interesting interactions between Jack and Ianto, some of which looks like it has/is going to involve a sort of time travel. Updates are long in coming, but seeing as the length of each section is ridiculous, I'm not going to complain too much.

Excerpt:
For two years Ianto has been doing his best to forget, to bury the memories. And now, if Harkness does turn out to want what Oliver wanted…It won’t be the same, he tells himself firmly. Won’t be trapped. Won’t be a prisoner this time. As soon as she’s better, we’ll leave. Slowly, his hands stop shaking. Lisa, he reminds himself. It’s for Lisa. Whatever it takes, remember? Doesn’t matter what it costs. You can handle it. It’s for her. But he feels so cold.

Title: Get Jones
Author: [personal profile] valderys
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 5,342
Notes: AU for the Age of Steel Whoniverse, this is just one take on what other paths Ianto and Jack may have taken :)
Summary: JACK: Ianto Jones, born August 19th 1983. Able student but not exceptional, one minor conviction for shoplifting in your teens. But what if crime had suited Ianto?
Commentary: What if, indeed? This is an amazing, noir-esque story about a Ianto who manages to still be the loyal, stubborn, intelligent man we've all come to know and love, even as he steals from alt!Torchwood. His meeting with Jack (presumably not immortal and still a Time Agent) and subsequent moments are well-done and just plain fun to read.
Excerpt: “What,” Ianto snarls, teeth grinding, “The bloody fuck do you think you’re doing?”

And the man laughs. “I’m robbing you, of course. What does it look like? Nice move, by the way.”

American accent. Ianto stares, not letting his arm waver, disbelief warring with fury. “And what makes you think I’m going to let that happen?”

“You’ve got no choice?”

Ianto cocks his head and raises an eyebrow. The man’s arm isn’t wavering either, and he’s pointing an old-fashioned handgun, a Webley, Ianto thinks, of all things, right at Ianto’s forehead. It crosses his mind that an old-fashioned gun like that might be slower than his own, although, probably, unfortunately, not slow enough.

“No chance,” he says, and knows it to be true. He doesn’t want to die in such a pointless encounter, but he will, if he has to. The goods are important enough for that.

Title: Come Away, Oh Human Child
Author: sparking_off
Rating: T
Word count: ~9200 - split into two parts by LJ claiming it's too big. Sigh.
Timeline: Set during ‘Small Worlds’, no spoilers past that.
Characters: Ianto-centric, Jack/Ianto.
Summary: An alternative take on the events in ‘Small Worlds’, from the point of view of someone who knows the fairies intimately.

Title: The World’s More Full of Weeping
Author: sparking_off

Rating: K+
Word count: 5779
Timeline: Set in the time between ‘Greeks Bearing Gifts’ and ‘Out of Time’, although there’s no reference to ‘They Keep Killing Suzie’.
Characters: Ianto-centric, Jack/Ianto
Summary: Ten years after the death of Ianto’s mother, he returns to her childhood home to say goodbye and to be himself, away from the dangers and secrecy of Torchwood, and away from the confusion that is his relationship with Jack.

Commentary: The idea of Ianto as one of the fairies' Choosen Ones isn't something new in fandom. What is new is the idea of Ianto as a fairy- a fairy lord, even. sparking_off's Ianto is a comflicted fellow, stranding between two very different worlds, both a which are frightening in their own way, not in the least because he loves them both. The writing style itself is very subtle and soothing, and sometimes nonlinear as well, as Ianto deals with the effects of things which to the reader have no cause. If you're a fan of strong Ianto or romantic Janto, this is a story for you.

Title: Repair In Route
Author: Otrame
Genre: Angst, Dark, Drama, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: NC-17
Other/Implied Pairings: Owen/Tosh, Jack/Doctor (kind of one-sided), Martha/Doctor (also a tad one-sided), Master/Jack (noncon)
Summary: The Year-That-Never-Was left open wounds. Healing them would take time. But of course, they had time
Status: WIP
Length: Multipart
Word Count: Ongoing
Warnings: non-con, character death, suicide, mental illness, torture
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Many, many people comment on the lack of focus Torchwood hason Jack's recovery from what was probably a not-too-pleasant experience, not to mention repairing his relationship with the Doctor, who was outright mean to Jack for the first two episodes of the Master arc. Most of these people focus on his recovery in the context of Torchwood Season Two, in codas for KKBB, Meat, and Exit Wounds. But Otrame takes a different spin- after all, the TARDIS is a time travel machine. Martha, Jack, and the Doctor could have taken a trip or two in between the Master's death and Jack choosing the return to his team in Cardiff. This explores how the four of them (Martha, Jack, the Doctor, and the TARDIS) would heal in this situation. Combined with some frankly brilliant theories about what, exactly, the Time Agency did this is something I'd highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of dark fics. One word of caution- although she updates fairly regularly, this is a WIP, and they are all still very broken, although Jack does seem to have the worst of it right now.

Memories are just stray neuro-chemical pulses in the matrix of my brain, and if a Time Lord can’t control a few stray neuro-chemical pulses in his own brain… But of course I can. I can allow a few to remain. Just enough so I know what happened. Put the rest in deep storage, only called up when absolutely necessary. And I refuse to believe that there will ever be a time I need to remember

Jack, sitting in an enormous puddle of blood holding a corpse in his arms. The blood has clotted, the serum separated and spread out from the original stain on the floor. The thinner places have already dried; the corpse is ice cold. Jack’s eyes are dead.

….

You start here. The universe is this way. Reset all variables to current conditions. The past is not a real thing. You are alive, in a healthy body. Your TARDIS is healing. You can go on from here.

Summary: John Ellis explores Torchwood.
Status: COMPLETE
Length: One-shot
Word Count: 1,406
Warnings: spoilers for Torchwood 1x10 “Out of Time,” Homophobia
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Well now, this is a bit different from the usually written fics based on TW episode 1x10 (Out of Time). Rather than being a coda, it takes place somewhere in the middle of the episode, most likely before John goes to see his aged son and loses all hope of fitting into this strange future. It is fully from John’s POV and his helplessness is already evident.

EXCERPT:

He wandered around the Hub, exploring. A severed hand: how disgusting. Many things he could not identify. Metal, stone, mysterious goo in glass dishes. A morgue, kept locked. Computers everywhere, but he couldn't see many books. How could they trust the computers? How could they give the machines such power over them? They didn't seem to notice, or care. There was too much glass - was it safe? How did they keep the place warm and lit? It must be a colossal use of power, of expenditure, of waste.

He was worrying too much, but he couldn't let go… He wandered on. He wanted to escape, but how can you escape a time? You can only escape a place. Everywhere he went, he was still caught in this inexplicable future.

He'd never thought it would be like this.

EXCERPT

Spence grinned, and opened the door. Ianto peered inside the brightly-lit room, wincing a little at the assault on his senses. It took him a moment to be able to see clearly, and once he could, he gasped out loud in astonishment at what he was seeing.

Inside the room was a man, huddled in a far corner of the room and watching them with wild eyes. He wore filthy sweatpants and a torn, dirty tee-shirt. His hair was long and shaggy — although, Ianto was curious to note that he had no beard or any other sign of facial hair — and there were manacles around his wrists and ankles, as well as what appeared to be a leather collar around his neck. Five separate chains kept him secured to the wall.

Ianto felt a rush of anger at the inhumanity of the sight before him. “Is this some sort of joke? Since when do we lock up humans?”

“This is no joke, Jones, and we don’t consider it to be human. Say hello to Torchwood’s longest surviving resident.”

Comment or Excerpt from fic: WHOA! What a way to start a fic... BANG! The remaining TW team's on a mission when UNIT comes with guns blazing (and sticks up their rears) to ruin everything! But it is oh so amusing to see Jack rip a new into the UNIT commander, though! *glee* It sounds like James Bond, Torchwood style, so if all the violence, swearing, and sex that's being promised isn't incentive enough, then Jack and Ianto in tuxes should be! *drools*

EXCERPT:

The large doors blasted open, lights shone like a thousand suns and a terrible noise like a screaming banshee bore down on them. Gwen swore and threw herself backwards through the door as men in black uniforms rushed the area... A helicopter landed, cars drove up, and someone spoke in a bull horn. Somewhere, in her ear, Jack swore loud and colorfully... The aliens reached into the boxes and hauled out very big, very powerful guns. Gwen, realizing what was about to happen, threw herself onto the ground and curled into a small a ball as possible. The aliens fired. The weapons didn’t help. Sub machine guns rat-tat-tatted and gunned the aliens down instantly. Some of the bullets ripped through the door and hit the wall around Gwen. She shrieked, and in her ear both Ianto and Jack roared.

Everything went very quiet, save for the rotor blades of the helicopter...

EXCERPT:

Ianto was humming softly as he went about fixing... a coffee... sliding into his seat, he mindlessly picked up a small package that had been sitting there... Giving the thick envelope a gentle squeeze, he could feel... something... there. A box?... he tore at the opening... and let the contents slide into his waiting hand.

Ianto frowned as he looked down at the pack of cards before him. Tarot? Turning them over, he closely examined the pictures on the front... The images appeared to shift slightly, rearranging itself, settling into place... Each card was unique, unlike any Tarot deck he’d ever seen before. Pausing, he glanced over at the envelope. The... printing simply stated To Help You—no name... He didn’t remember actually picking this up... Shifting his gaze back to the cards, Ianto thought he saw something move again. There! The image... seemed to shimmer... Sucking in a short breath, Ianto realized it was the restaurant Jack and Gwen had gone to investigate.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is mostly an angsty fic with a heavy dose of hurt/comfot, especially in the second part. Jack looked up from his paperwork as Gwen strode determinedly into his office... Ute-oh. She looks to be gearing up for a long one...

“We need help. We need to start thinking about…replacements,” she said, hesitant but no more determined.

Jack froze at those words. Replacements? Owen and Tosh? They could never be replaced. Even though he's thought of it, it felt slightly like betrayal. “We’re handling things well, Gwen. For the time being, we’re set. We don’t need anyone,” he said but a whisper in the back of his head called him on his denial.

“Jack! Open your eyes!” she... dragged him to the window... pointing below. “Look. Down there.”

Jack closed his eyes at the sight briefly, then forced himself to do as Gwen suggested.
