Jack didn't bother to contradict her, instead becoming distracted when his headset demanded his attention. A simple press of a button and he'd answered the call. "Yeah?"

He wasn't sure what he'd been expecting: Ianto calling to say he was bored, Owen calling to demand food, or Tosh to say she'd finished her reports. Something bland. Something neutral.

Instead, Tosh's stressed voice flooded into his ear. "Jack? It's Ianto – something's happened to him, I don't know what. I think he's hurt."

That was all he had to hear before he was drawing his gun and heading for the door: rushing to the rescue.

Commentary: This fic is adorable. I want to hug it and smoosh it and call it George. On a slightly more serious note, this is a fic that takes an idea that can easily end in something trite and adds depth to it. Some of these songs he avoids out of embarassment, other because of the paiful memories they remind him of; other, are merely annoying in and of themselves. My favorite is number seven, but each of these songs has something to offer.

otrameis someone whose fic stays over on Teaspoon, but is known there for writing some of the best romances. Part of the reason is her Jack is such a lover: he loves the Doctor, he loves Tosh, he loves Owen, he loves Gwen, and he loves Ianto, and each love is unique and not necessarily sexual. But, for the most part, her stories aren't fluff; they tend towards the dark side, and this particular one is no exception. Ianto is sick, dying, and no one is sure of the cause or the cure. This situation taxes Owen as a doctor, Jack as a lover, and Ianto as a person facing difficult choices to make- and there's more at stake here than his own life...

Commentary: Ianto is transported 1,000 years into the future, where Jack is the Captain of a military base no one wants. I won't spoil you, but I have to say, for a fic written before CoE, it speaks to one of fandom's current big fears; the earlier chapters might be hard to read for this reason, but if you stick it out, you'll find it well worth the effort.

Title: Go Away A Little Closer

Commentary: This is a story where Jack and Ianto get domestic. So domestic, they even buy a house together, and there is talk of marriage. It's also a story where Jack dresses up in Wolverine pyjamas, Blowfish are sort of annoying, and Jack fails at marriage proposals. Do you need to hear more?

Well, then, how about this? There's a sequel, Time Stands Still is when the CP actually (sort of) happens, and is every bit a hilarious and awkward and full of crossed wires and random Torchwood-style craziness as, despite themselves, Jack and Ianto figure out how to live with each other.

Comment: What if John Hart were exactly the sort of man everyone thought he was when he first appeared? What if Grey somehow got free in the Hub? What if after being buried alive, Jack came back with something? And how, on top of recovering from Tosh and Owen's death's, would Gwen and Ianto cope?

This is an AU after Series Two ended, and there is a very strong sense of "the end is where we start from" throughout this fic- the sense that despite all of Torchwood's losses, they'll somehow be able to recover. There is a plot, but most of the action centers around Jack and Ianto, and I think you'll find it a very satisfying read.

Comment: Ianto is remarkable for many reasons, but one thing that has always stood out in the minds of many fans is how easily he was able to con his way into a position in Torchwood Three- as well as a position in Jack's life. He conned the con-man, and that takes skills. This fic is wonderful because it not only showcases those skills, but Jack's reactions to watching someone else succumb to them.

“This castle is quite lovely, though I imagine it would be extremely hard to heat in the winter, what with all of the concealed nooks and crannies,” she said.

How subtle, Jack’s voice sounded in his ear. “It is, at that. Still, we wouldn’t want our Castle any other way, I’m sure. Ianto Jones,” he proffered his hand. “I’m with the Welsh Tourism Board.”

Comment or Excerpt from fic: I admit, I'm a huge sucker for the "Five Things" format. Bias aside, though, this is a really good sample of the genre, using the format as a frame and as inspiration, not as a crutch. The story begins during Ianto's first weeks at Torchwood Three and follows the progress of his relationships with the team--and Jack--up through the events of the first season. The "complaints" fit in nicely with Ianto's sense of humor--and sarcasm. It's a nicely well-written and subtle story.

The characters are well-done, and I was especially pleased to see Jack and Ianto interacting like the emotionally awkward men they both are, and equally pleased to see them acting so physically comfortable with each other. Theirs is an odd and difficult relationship to capture, and I think this story does it very well. In addition, the story itself is interesting and engaging and has a fascinating premise. It's also the kind of story that you'll really want to read twice, just to admire the new layers of meaning that show up on the second read. Really well done.

Commentary: There is something horrfyingly hilarious about his fic. On the one hand, there is nothing funny about being in a confined space for a long period of time. On the other hand, getting just a bit too comfotrable with your cellmate can be kind of funny. Jack's observations at the end are both touching and utterly Jack, and the punchline with have you laughing on the floor.

Title: First Time for Everything

Comment: This isn't the sort of background I normally buy for Ianto, but the details and emotions are so vivid here that it's hard not to buy it. The story is shaping up to be complicated and full of interesting interactions between Jack and Ianto, some of which looks like it has/is going to involve a sort of time travel. Updates are long in coming, but seeing as the length of each section is ridiculous, I'm not going to complain too much.

For two years Ianto has been doing his best to forget, to bury the memories. And now, if Harkness does turn out to want what Oliver wanted…It won’t be the same, he tells himself firmly. Comment: Set post Cyberwoman and Countrcide, Ianto is trying to come to terms with losing his girlfriend *and* nearly being eaten by cannibals. This fic is one of the few that I have read that actually explores how horrific and traumatic this would be for Ianto and appreciates what anyone would have to do to stay sane. Really heartbreaking and genuine with some Jack and Ianto soapy shower fun thrown in there too. Best fic I have read this year so far [and believe me, I don't get out much].
