Title: 10 Songs Ianto Jones Never Wants To Hear Again
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pinkfairy727
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Don't run with scissors.
Genre: Fluff, humor, romance
Summary: Check tin label.
Commentary: This fic is adorable. I want to hug it and smoosh it and call it George. On a slightly more serious note, this is a fic that takes an idea that can easily end in something trite and adds depth to it. Some of these songs he avoids out of embarassment, other because of the paiful memories they remind him of; other, are merely annoying in and of themselves. My favorite is number seven, but each of these songs has something to offer.

Title: Losing Ianto
Author: Otrame ([livejournal.com profile] otrame)
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort, romance
Warnings: Medical details, character death
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Ianto is desperately ill, but not even Doctor Owen Harper can figure out what is wrong or how to save Ianto. And Jack.
Commentary: [livejournal.com profile] otrameis someone whose fic stays over on Teaspoon, but is known there for writing some of the best romances. Part of the reason is her Jack is such a lover: he loves the Doctor, he loves Tosh, he loves Owen, he loves Gwen, and he loves Ianto, and each love is unique and not necessarily sexual. But, for the most part, her stories aren't fluff; they tend towards the dark side, and this particular one is no exception. Ianto is sick, dying, and no one is sure of the cause or the cure. This situation taxes Owen as a doctor, Jack as a lover, and Ianto as a person facing difficult choices to make- and there's more at stake here than his own life...

Title: Protective Aggression
Author: [livejournal.com profile] emily_sheppard
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Smut, Character Study, Introspection
Warnings: Violent sex, elements of D/s
Status: Complete
Length: One-shot
Summary: A soldier never comes out of a war unscathed and Jack's trained Ianto to be one almost to perfection.
Commentary: This fic hits pretty much all of my fic kinks: it touches on Ianto's ruthless side, on his loyalty, and on how much Torchwood can take from a person- without killing them. Told from Jack's perspective, this story is more than a bit on the dark side, and ends on a slightly uncomfortable note, with the feeling the however much they lean on each other, something could pull the rug out from under them at any moment.

Title: Heaven in Hell's Demesne
Author: [livejournal.com profile] crystalfic
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete
Length: ~800 words
Warnings: Torture, violence
Summary: Sometimes, all it takes to call you back from a nightmare is a familiar voice.
Commentary: Anyone who takes a good look at my recs can tell that I am a sucker for fics dealing with the YTNW. This is a short fic, and it deals with many the familiar tropes of the subgenre, but with such wonderful characterizations that I couldn't help but bookmark it. Jack's humor, Ianto's understated care, it all shines through with perfect clarity.

Title: And You Will Know Her By The Smile In Her Eyes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] gilascave
Genre: Romance, family, angst, AU
Rating: PG-15
Length: 21,500 words
Status: Complete
Warning: MPreg
Comment: There's something about this fic that stuck with me. Maybe it was the underlying message at the end of the fic that Ianto and Jack were very similar people after all. Maybe it's the way Ianto pragmatically and stoically tries to regulate his emotions and behavior. Maybe it's the sneaky bit of implied Doctor/Master slash. Probably, it's the fact that this fic is just plain adorable. So, read and enjoy. This is comfort food fic at it's best.

Title: Something New
Author: [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered
Genre: PWP, Kink
Rating: NC-17
Summary: "Don't move. Don't open your eyes." Written for the prompts: Gun-play, object insertion, D/s.
Status: Complete
Length: 1,949 words
Warnings: Gunplay, D/s, really, really kinky
Comment: This is shameless PWP, as much about fun and affection between the two men as it is about the level of trust playing with these kinks like this necessitates. On a more personal note, I've always liked the idea of Dom!Ianto, and who doesn't like Jack's gun?

In honor of the snazzy new format and my self-appointed mission to start posting more recs, I wanted to give you my recently discovered new favorite. (Note to the admins- for some reason, when I attempted to get to the masterlist, the google.docs didn't want to let me in! Perhaps because I was logged into my personal gmail account? I dunno! So if this has been recced before, please let me know and I will happily get rid of the redundancy.)

Title: Mutual Service 'Verse
Author: [livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot
Genre: AU, Angst, Romance
Rating: PG-13
Summary: When some misplaced technology triggers a custom-coded lockdown, Torchwood quickly realises the quickest way to open up the Hub again is to get the program's creator to shut it off. The only problem is that Ianto Jones is dead.
Status: Each story is complete, but the series is ongoing.
Length: 4 separate stories in 6 parts
Warnings: Death... emo-ness? Boy kissing and hints towards sexual themes.
Comment or Excerpt from fic:
This fic is absolutely BRILLIANT. It is very well written, and [livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot packs an emotional punch without becoming melodramatic. The premise for this fic centers around the glove and a "what-if Ianto had actually acted on his suicidal/depressed feelings" and is incredibly well-done; not something I'd ever thought of before. Everyone is fabulously in character- Ianto is the sad, stoic Ianto we saw from series 1, underestimated and unappreciated but resilient, Jack is the guilt-riddled immortal who feels both responsible for and flabbergasted by the people under his command- and the writing style is simple but fraught with implicit emotion and illumination of the characters. Morbidly funny, it takes They Keep Killing Suzie and turns it into a story I would have liked just as much, if not more (which is saying something, since TKKS is definitely in my top 3 Torchwood episodes). I can't say enough good things about this series; it completely floored me, intrigued me, and left me begging for more!

As the author writes, the title is taken from the suicide note of Charlotte Perkins Gilman: "Human life consists in mutual service. No grief, pain, misfortune, or 'broken heart,' is excuse for cutting off one's life while any power of service remains. But when all usefulness is over, when one is assured of an unavoidable and imminent death, it is the simplest of human rights to choose a quick and easy death in place of a slow and horrible one."

Title: If Not Wisely
Author: [livejournal.com profile] liadan14
Genre: Angst
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Ianto keeps count. He hardly knows why--it's not like it matters, it's not like Jack cares, it's not like he wouldn't sound like a creepy stalker if he were to say something like, "I remember our seventeenth kiss. It was in the archives."
Status: Complete
Length: ~9,500 words in 3 parts
Warnings: None

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This story snuck up on me. I started reading it and certainly thought it was good, but as the story unfolded I found myself absolutely drawn in and held fast. It's beautifully written, showing Ianto as the more-than-slightly screwed up person he is without taking him out of character. The build-up to the end was very well-done, and the end itself was a perfect grace note to a wonderful story.

Title: Anodyne
Author:  os4a2no9
Genre:  Closest to hurt/comfort, but that's not quite right
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: "Ianto’s numb, and he likes it that way"
Status: Complete, 2335 words
Warnings: Sex and heartbreak
Comment: Set post Cyberwoman and Countrcide, Ianto is trying to come to terms with losing his girlfriend *and* nearly being eaten by cannibals. This fic is one of the few that I have read that actually explores how horrific and traumatic this would be for Ianto and appreciates what anyone would have to do to stay sane. Really heartbreaking and genuine with some Jack and Ianto soapy shower fun thrown in there too. Best fic I have read this year so far [and believe me, I don't get out much].

"Time passed in Torchwood as time always did: noisily, messily, and with a great deal of shouting. He was numb to most of it."

Title: Come Away, Oh Human Child
Author: sparking_off
Rating: T
Word count: ~9200 - split into two parts by LJ claiming it's too big. Sigh.
Timeline: Set during ‘Small Worlds’, no spoilers past that.
Characters: Ianto-centric, Jack/Ianto.
Summary: An alternative take on the events in ‘Small Worlds’, from the point of view of someone who knows the fairies intimately.

Title: The World’s More Full of Weeping
Author: sparking_off

Rating: K+
Word count: 5779
Timeline: Set in the time between ‘Greeks Bearing Gifts’ and ‘Out of Time’, although there’s no reference to ‘They Keep Killing Suzie’.
Characters: Ianto-centric, Jack/Ianto
Summary: Ten years after the death of Ianto’s mother, he returns to her childhood home to say goodbye and to be himself, away from the dangers and secrecy of Torchwood, and away from the confusion that is his relationship with Jack.

Commentary: The idea of Ianto as one of the fairies' Choosen Ones isn't something new in fandom. What is new is the idea of Ianto as a fairy- a fairy lord, even. sparking_off's Ianto is a comflicted fellow, stranding between two very different worlds, both a which are frightening in their own way, not in the least because he loves them both. The writing style itself is very subtle and soothing, and sometimes nonlinear as well, as Ianto deals with the effects of things which to the reader have no cause. If you're a fan of strong Ianto or romantic Janto, this is a story for you.

Title: Repair In Route
Author: Otrame
Genre: Angst, Dark, Drama, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: NC-17
Other/Implied Pairings: Owen/Tosh, Jack/Doctor (kind of one-sided), Martha/Doctor (also a tad one-sided), Master/Jack (noncon)
Summary: The Year-That-Never-Was left open wounds. Healing them would take time. But of course, they had time
Status: WIP
Length: Multipart
Word Count: Ongoing
Warnings: non-con, character death, suicide, mental illness, torture
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Many, many people comment on the lack of focus Torchwood hason Jack's recovery from what was probably a not-too-pleasant experience, not to mention repairing his relationship with the Doctor, who was outright mean to Jack for the first two episodes of the Master arc. Most of these people focus on his recovery in the context of Torchwood Season Two, in codas for KKBB, Meat, and Exit Wounds. But Otrame takes a different spin- after all, the TARDIS is a time travel machine. Martha, Jack, and the Doctor could have taken a trip or two in between the Master's death and Jack choosing the return to his team in Cardiff. This explores how the four of them (Martha, Jack, the Doctor, and the TARDIS) would heal in this situation. Combined with some frankly brilliant theories about what, exactly, the Time Agency did this is something I'd highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of dark fics. One word of caution- although she updates fairly regularly, this is a WIP, and they are all still very broken, although Jack does seem to have the worst of it right now.

Memories are just stray neuro-chemical pulses in the matrix of my brain, and if a Time Lord can’t control a few stray neuro-chemical pulses in his own brain… But of course I can. I can allow a few to remain. Just enough so I know what happened. Put the rest in deep storage, only called up when absolutely necessary. And I refuse to believe that there will ever be a time I need to remember

Jack, sitting in an enormous puddle of blood holding a corpse in his arms. The blood has clotted, the serum separated and spread out from the original stain on the floor. The thinner places have already dried; the corpse is ice cold. Jack’s eyes are dead.

….

You start here. The universe is this way. Reset all variables to current conditions. The past is not a real thing. You are alive, in a healthy body. Your TARDIS is healing. You can go on from here.

Title: John Ellis
Author: [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako
Genre: Slight Angst, Drama, Romance, Episode Related, Gap-filler
Rating: PG
Other/Implied Pairings: Owen/Diane
Summary: John Ellis explores Torchwood.
Status: COMPLETE
Length: One-shot
Word Count: 1,406
Warnings: spoilers for Torchwood 1x10 “Out of Time,” Homophobia
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Well now, this is a bit different from the usually written fics based on TW episode 1x10 (Out of Time). Rather than being a coda, it takes place somewhere in the middle of the episode, most likely before John goes to see his aged son and loses all hope of fitting into this strange future. It is fully from John’s POV and his helplessness is already evident.

~*~*~*~*~

EXCERPT:

He wandered around the Hub, exploring. A severed hand: how disgusting. Many things he could not identify. Metal, stone, mysterious goo in glass dishes. A morgue, kept locked. Computers everywhere, but he couldn't see many books. How could they trust the computers? How could they give the machines such power over them? They didn't seem to notice, or care. There was too much glass - was it safe? How did they keep the place warm and lit? It must be a colossal use of power, of expenditure, of waste.

He was worrying too much, but he couldn't let go… He wandered on. He wanted to escape, but how can you escape a time? You can only escape a place. Everywhere he went, he was still caught in this inexplicable future.

He'd never thought it would be like this.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] butterflycell
Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Drama, Episode Related, Gap-filler
Rating: R
Other/Implied Pairings: implied Ianto/Lisa
Summary: "You and me we were the pretenders / We let it all slip away. / In the end what you don't surrender, / Well the world just strips away. " - Human Touch, Bruce Springsteen
Status: COMPLETE
Length: One-shot
Word Count: ~ 4,050
Warnings: post: Torchwood 1x04 “Cyberwoman” & 1x06 “Countrycide”
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Oh GOD! SO MANY ANGSTY FICS! T____T But, there’s hope yet since this fic starts out angsty, but ends on a hopeful tone (if one doesn’t think about all that happens the rest of S1, anyway… *coughs*). So, this is the author’s take on how Janto relationship changed through the course of S1 (atleast until after “Countrycide”).

~*~*~*~*~

EXCERPT:

Jack had never felt as used as he had in the beginning of his relationship with Ianto. The occasional shag without any promise of a repeat, with absolutely no emotional attachment.

Of course, he didn’t realise why until later, and by the time he did, he didn’t begrudge Ianto because of it. The young man had been in emotional turmoil - every second of the day that he was alive and sane was a blessing. His mind tore him in two and his heart just made the fight worse.

Title: Things Rank and Gross Possess It Merely
Author: [livejournal.com profile] garnettrees
Summary: "'Tis an unweeded garden
That grows to seed. Things rank and gross in nature
Possess it merely."
-Hamlet, Act I, Scene II
Other Characters/Pairings: Tish's POV; some implied Gwen/Rhys and Owen/Diane
Warnings: Character death, implied rape, torture, unwanted groping
Status: WIP
Length: 2/5 parts posted
Commentary: Yes, I have a thing for fics which take place in the Year That Never Was. And this is an amazing example of what can be done with all the implied darkness that happened during that nonexistant period of time. Using Tish as the narrator works especially well here; we feel her suffering, both as Martha's sister and the person who was hired to stand there and look pretty. She also has the dubious position as one of the people who cleans up the Master's shit, which normally includes body parts. It's haunting and creepy, and written in an almost surreal style, which has the overall effect of making it very easy for the reader to feel just as sleep-deprived and hopeless as poor Tish.

Title: Being Alive
Author: [livejournal.com profile] erin_giles
Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Smut
Rating: NC-17
Other/Implied Pairings: implied past Ianto/Lisa
Summary: It wasn't about feelings with Jack and Ianto, not really, it was more about the desperate need to feel something other than the pain of losing and being lost - to feel alive.
Status: COMPLETE
Length: One-shot
Word Count: 2,641
Warnings: Spoilers for and post Torchwood: 1x04 “Cyberwoman,” 1x06 “Countrycide,” and 1x08 “They Keep Killing Suzie,” Smut
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Strangely enough, for me, the question of whether Janto's (sexual) relationship started before TW S1 or not depends on my mood, and I’ve read all versions. Regardless, I do like Erin’s take on how things started between them, the slow build-up of feelings and emotions.

EXCERPT:

There was something about Jack Harkness - always had been. Ever since he’d unquestioningly tried to catch the man... trying to subdue a pterodactyl Ianto couldn’t deny there was something... 51st Century pheromones Jack had said and Ianto had thought it was a line, although... it was probably the truth. Ianto hadn’t been thinking of Lisa as he lay on top of Jack... laughter on his lips and Jack’s hot breath on his face... It was overwhelming Ianto’s senses now… he leaned in to kiss Jack tenderly, pulling back slightly and resting his forehead against Jack’s. He breathed in deep, inhaling Jack’s scent one last time before pulling away to look meaningfully in Jack’s eyes.

“Thank you.” Ianto breathed, before... turning to leave. Jack didn’t move until he heard the cog door rolling back... letting out a long sigh... hee... turned to the decanter on his desk, but at the last minute changed his mind. He wanted – needed – sleep, and as he lay between the sheets that night he thought of life and not death.

Title: Perfect
Pairings: Jack/Ianto: Owen/Ianto friendship: implied Owen/Tosh: implied Gwen/Jack (unrequited/not acted upon): team love (of the platonic kind)
Genre: Fluff, mild angst, fluff
Rating: M for swearing. Lots and lots of swearing. Not bad swearing. Mostly pissed (drunk, if you're an American) swearing.
Spoilers: All of S1, first ep of S2 but selectively. This sort of AUs away simply in that in trying to write fluff, I wrote a sitcom. Dr Who: Last of the Time Lords and surrounding eps. I have made some assumptions about the TW team's ability to contact people and be contacted. Spoilers for the name of the guy at TW2.
Precis: When Jack died, they splintered. When he left, they drew together. Friday night drinks at Ianto's before and after the end of the human race.
Commentary: [livejournal.com profile] misswinterhill 's stuff is always a joy to read, and this fic is no exception. The very idea of the team going over to Ianto's to drink and watch him be drunk is cracktastic, yet none of the team are OOC, even when Ianto and Owen end up in the same bed. You will laugh throughout the entire fic, I promise you.
Exerpt: “Your problem,” said Owen, tapping his fingers against the tiles. “Is that you’re too thin. We need to feed you up and then you’ll hold your piss better.”

“My problem,” said Ianto, miserably. “Is that I drank nearly an entire bottle of bourbon on my own.”

Summary: When Jack smells a challenge, he doesn't let go...
Status: Work In Progress
Length: Multi-chapter / 9 TOTAL
Word Count: TBC
Warnings: spoilers for and post-Torchwood 1x04 "Cyberwoman," Smut
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Oh sneaky, sneaky Jack! ^^ Taking place post "Cyberwoman," Jack's "hunting" Ianto by constantly following him around and coming-on to him while Ianto is trying his best to ignore Jack and mind his own business. Unfortunately, Ianto should KNOW that Jack is a force that can't be ignored. This back-and-forth game is so amusing with Jack testing Ianto's limits, I'm eager to see it played out! ^^ And what's better, it comes with a dose of Gwen-bashing! ^_______________^

EXCERPT:

Jack... wouldn’t let any of his team get away with anything illegal. Except Ianto, maybe. The rest of the team had expected Jack to execute or... retcon him... However, they’d understood why Jack had given him... suspension and then allowed him back... Ianto had been right... None of them had ever asked him anything about his personal life... It was... this... that had born his forgiveness... Even though Jack had been the first to grant him clemency, the captain had kept a much closer eye on him... rarely leaving him alone...

Today... he saw that Ianto was reading a book... Jack... manipulated the camera down to get a closer look... Apparently, the movement... made... whirring sound, as Ianto whipped around... and glared at the camera. Jack had a feeling that Ianto knew it was him... With that, Ianto tucked the book into a drawer, locked it and walked out of the Office and into the hub. Jack cursed himself silently, but felt the thrill of a new challenge for himself...

The stranger crossed to Jack and conducted a rapid examination – fingers to the pulse at the throat, ear to the chest, a peek behind the eyelids, sniff to the mouth and then, bizarrely, a quick flick of the tongue to the underside of his jaw. “Hmm!” said the stranger, and dug in his pocket for something which vaguely resembled a screwdriver, whose glowing tip he passed back and forth over the Captain’s body. “Ah-ha,” he said, straightening abruptly. “You actually had me worried there for a minute.”

“What is it?” asked Gwen eagerly.

“He’s not dead, for starters,” said the man, then pulled up short. “Well. Mostly not dead – well. Temporarily dead. Come around in his own time, when he’s good and ready.” He puffed out his cheeks. “Unfortunately, I haven’t the time to be standing around scratching my head waiting – well, I have got the time, but I’m bollocks at waiting.”

Genre: Angst, General, Romance
Rating: PG13
Summary: Straddled over the rift, the Hub was a place where things were lost and found. Strange objects washed in like driftwood. Things went missing. There was never any sign of where they'd gone.
Status: Complete
Length: Oneshot
Excerpt from fic:
~_~_~_~~_~

It was disconcerting, but a lot of things about Torchwood were. Ianto got used to it like he got used to feeding weevils and cleaning up alien slime. He put everything in its place when he left each night, and if a few train timetables or coffee cups were missing in the morning, if an odd sock appeared, he tried not to pay it too much heed.

Tosh told him she'd found the whole thing alarming at first. "I thought I was going crazy," she said. "I'd put a folder down, and whoosh! It'd be gone. And I still don't like it. I mean, this stuff is confidential. It doesn't stop being confidential if it washes up on Bizarro Weevil World." She tapped her pen (not one of the alien ones, Ianto hoped) against her mouth. "Perhaps we could devise a code," she said thoughtfully. "Something Bizarro weevils wouldn't be able to crack."
