Comment: Ianto is remarkable for many reasons, but one thing that has always stood out in the minds of many fans is how easily he was able to con his way into a position in Torchwood Three- as well as a position in Jack's life. He conned the con-man, and that takes skills. This fic is wonderful because it not only showcases those skills, but Jack's reactions to watching someone else succumb to them.

Commentary:

misswinterhill 's stuff is always a joy to read, and this fic is no exception. The very idea of the team going over to Ianto's to drink and watch him be drunk is cracktastic, yet none of the team are OOC, even when Ianto and Owen end up in the same bed. You will laugh throughout the entire fic, I promise you.
Exerpt: “Your problem,” said Owen, tapping his fingers against the tiles. “Is that you’re too thin. We need to feed you up and then you’ll hold your piss better.”

“My problem,” said Ianto, miserably. “Is that I drank nearly an entire bottle of bourbon on my own.”

It features characters from Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures as well as the entire cast of Torchwood- even PC Andy makes an apperance as an adorkable kid in the last chapter. The format is wonderful as well- each chapter opens with a quote from the series, which perfectly, and sometimes hilariously, sets the tone for the chapter.Everything a Torchwood AU should be, this is a fic you really don't want to miss out on.

It's the simple things, the little moments that can completely throw your life off the course it's firmly been set on.

For Ianto Jones, it had been something as simple as offering help with a stubborn horse.

The second of which is that the reasoning behind the cheating is done so well- Jack not really all there, you can tell, and Ianto is feeling really frustrated about his inability to bring him back. Ianto's search for closure from Eugene's death is as much about his search for answers about where his life is going now as it is anything else, and Eugene is such an unabashed Ianto fanboy it makes you laugh. Plus, you know, Jack/Ianto smut at the end.

Were he anyone else he probably wouldn’t have noticed in the first place, but he’s danced with Jack before and this right here isn’t dancing *with* Jack. Because Jack has a way of making you feel special, cherished, like you’re the only one that matters when you’re in his arms – or at least that’s how it felt to Ianto last time – and at this very moment Ianto feels anything but.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what – and who – Jack is thinking about. That, in turn, makes Ianto dwell on a subject he usually avoids contemplating, because he may have come into this relationship with his eyes wide open he hadn’t quite thought he would up against *this*.

He moved the chair, turning to the desk. Glancing over his shoulder he saw the four of them involved in an argument. So carefully, he put up a hand and put his finger against one of the pieces of paper on his desk. He moved it to one side, taking it out of the folder and he looked down at it. There was a symbol on the top and then a huge amount of black scrawls. Jack looked at them, he didn’t understand them. It was his room, his office, where he worked and he didn’t understand a single thing around him.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a beautiful, beautiful story. There is, I'll admit, a lot of focus on Owen and Ianto's friendship, and Jack doesn't come back til the second part, but then it explores the effects of Jack leaving - and returning - on Ianto (and they're very in love and it's beautiful). It also explores the team dynamic in a really interesting way. Poor, sweet Ianto! It's a different take on the Jack!returning fic; it doesn't rely on the usual plot devices. Ianto is strong but recovering from physical trauma and the team takes care of him and it's incredibly sweet and a bit heartbreaking in the best way.

Excerpt: “What Owen is trying to say is that you treated all of us like shit running off with the Doctor like that,” added Gwen, her voice low and furious. “And if you don’t take Ianto and adore him, and make this up to him after all he’s been through, then I’ll rip your bloody arms off.”
