Commentary: This fic is adorable. I want to hug it and smoosh it and call it George. On a slightly more serious note, this is a fic that takes an idea that can easily end in something trite and adds depth to it. Some of these songs he avoids out of embarassment, other because of the paiful memories they remind him of; other, are merely annoying in and of themselves. My favorite is number seven, but each of these songs has something to offer.

Title: Losing Ianto

Summary: Ianto is desperately ill, but not even Doctor Owen Harper can figure out what is wrong or how to save Ianto. And Jack.
Commentary: otrameis someone whose fic stays over on Teaspoon, but is known there for writing some of the best romances. Part of the reason is her Jack is such a lover: he loves the Doctor, he loves Tosh, he loves Owen, he loves Gwen, and he loves Ianto, and each love is unique and not necessarily sexual. But, for the most part, her stories aren't fluff; they tend towards the dark side, and this particular one is no exception. Ianto is sick, dying, and no one is sure of the cause or the cure. This situation taxes Owen as a doctor, Jack as a lover, and Ianto as a person facing difficult choices to make- and there's more at stake here than his own life...

Title: Protective Aggression

Summary: A soldier never comes out of a war unscathed and Jack's trained Ianto to be one almost to perfection.
Commentary: This fic hits pretty much all of my fic kinks: it touches on Ianto's ruthless side, on his loyalty, and on how much Torchwood can take from a person- without killing them. Told from Jack's perspective, this story is more than a bit on the dark side, and ends on a slightly uncomfortable note, with the feeling the however much they lean on each other, something could pull the rug out from under them at any moment.

Title: Let Me Kill You Sweetheart

Summary: Ianto gets a case of 'flu that forces him to explore the way that he interacts with life, all very much against his will.
Commentary: Oh, alien viruses, how strange can you get? The short answer is "very". The long answer... takes over 9,000 words to accurate describe.

This story is largely about Ianto's struggle to deal with the effects of the virus, but through his befuddled eyes we also get the story of Jack dealing with a virus which inevitably ends in tears.

Title: Go Away A Little Closer

Summary: A hard day brings strife, understanding, and a proposition or two for the future.
Commentary: This is a story where Jack and Ianto get domestic. So domestic, they even buy a house together, and there is talk of marriage. It's also a story where Jack dresses up in Wolverine pyjamas, Blowfish are sort of annoying, and Jack fails at marriage proposals. Do you need to hear more?

Well, then, how about this? There's a sequel, Time Stands Still is when the CP actually (sort of) happens, and is every bit a hilarious and awkward and full of crossed wires and random Torchwood-style craziness as, despite themselves, Jack and Ianto figure out how to live with each other.

Title: Heaven in Hell's Demesne

Summary: Sometimes, all it takes to call you back from a nightmare is a familiar voice.
Commentary: Anyone who takes a good look at my recs can tell that I am a sucker for fics dealing with the YTNW. This is a short fic, and it deals with many the familiar tropes of the subgenre, but with such wonderful characterizations that I couldn't help but bookmark it. Jack's humor, Ianto's understated care, it all shines through with perfect clarity.

Title: World Enough, and Time

Summary: A man gets so many chances.
Commentary: If you take a look at the tags, you'll notice that we at janto_recshave this thing about giving Ianto more time. We make him immortal. We make him a timelord. We have him die of old age, or at least in his thirties. World Enough, and Time is a sweet little piece that plays with the idea of Ianto returning again and again. As taffimaisaid in the comments, "For a story that had Ianto die about fifteen times, this is really adorable."
Excerpt: Jack's died ten thousand times; he's only lived once. As far as he knows, as far as he's ever experienced, only one of those things makes him different from every other human.

Title: Hourglass

Comment: What if John Hart were exactly the sort of man everyone thought he was when he first appeared? What if Grey somehow got free in the Hub? What if after being buried alive, Jack came back with something? And how, on top of recovering from Tosh and Owen's death's, would Gwen and Ianto cope?

This is an AU after Series Two ended, and there is a very strong sense of "the end is where we start from" throughout this fic- the sense that despite all of Torchwood's losses, they'll somehow be able to recover. There is a plot, but most of the action centers around Jack and Ianto, and I think you'll find it a very satisfying read.

Comment: There aren't really the words for how disturbed this fic is. No, really, there are none. The TARDIS is sociopathic. Jack is broken. The Master is manic. The Doctor is manic. And Ianto is the drug they're all addicted to. And yet- you can't look away. You can't help but laugh. And you're never sure which way this fic will go. The fic itself is as addicting as Ianto.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: Many, many people comment on the lack of focus Torchwood hason Jack's recovery from what was probably a not-too-pleasant experience, not to mention repairing his relationship with the Doctor, who was outright mean to Jack for the first two episodes of the Master arc. Most of these people focus on his recovery in the context of Torchwood Season Two, in codas for KKBB, Meat, and Exit Wounds. But Otrame takes a different spin- after all, the TARDIS is a time travel machine. Martha, Jack, and the Doctor could have taken a trip or two in between the Master's death and Jack choosing the return to his team in Cardiff. This explores how the four of them (Martha, Jack, the Doctor, and the TARDIS) would heal in this situation. Combined with some frankly brilliant theories about what, exactly, the Time Agency did this is something I'd highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of dark fics. One word of caution- although she updates fairly regularly, this is a WIP, and they are all still very broken, although Jack does seem to have the worst of it right now.
