Commentary: This fic is adorable. I want to hug it and smoosh it and call it George. On a slightly more serious note, this is a fic that takes an idea that can easily end in something trite and adds depth to it. Some of these songs he avoids out of embarassment, other because of the paiful memories they remind him of; other, are merely annoying in and of themselves. My favorite is number seven, but each of these songs has something to offer.

Commentary: I first clicked on this fic after reading the title, which was something of a mistake on my part. If you only read the title, you see, you expect crack of the fluffy variety, but instead, you might end up crying only a little at the end.

Commentary:

otrameis someone whose fic stays over on Teaspoon, but is known there for writing some of the best romances. Part of the reason is her Jack is such a lover: he loves the Doctor, he loves Tosh, he loves Owen, he loves Gwen, and he loves Ianto, and each love is unique and not necessarily sexual. But, for the most part, her stories aren't fluff; they tend towards the dark side, and this particular one is no exception. Ianto is sick, dying, and no one is sure of the cause or the cure. This situation taxes Owen as a doctor, Jack as a lover, and Ianto as a person facing difficult choices to make- and there's more at stake here than his own life...

Commentary: This fic hits pretty much all of my fic kinks: it touches on Ianto's ruthless side, on his loyalty, and on how much Torchwood can take from a person- without killing them. Told from Jack's perspective, this story is more than a bit on the dark side, and ends on a slightly uncomfortable note, with the feeling the however much they lean on each other, something could pull the rug out from under them at any moment.

Commentary: Ianto is transported 1,000 years into the future, where Jack is the Captain of a military base no one wants. I won't spoil you, but I have to say, for a fic written before CoE, it speaks to one of fandom's current big fears; the earlier chapters might be hard to read for this reason, but if you stick it out, you'll find it well worth the effort.

Commentary: Oh, alien viruses, how strange can you get? The short answer is "very". The long answer... takes over 9,000 words to accurate describe.

This story is largely about Ianto's struggle to deal with the effects of the virus, but through his befuddled eyes we also get the story of Jack dealing with a virus which inevitably ends in tears.

Title: Go Away A Little Closer

Summary: A hard day brings strife, understanding, and a proposition or two for the future.
Commentary: This is a story where Jack and Ianto get domestic. So domestic, they even buy a house together, and there is talk of marriage. It's also a story where Jack dresses up in Wolverine pyjamas, Blowfish are sort of annoying, and Jack fails at marriage proposals. Do you need to hear more?

Well, then, how about this? There's a sequel, Time Stands Still is when the CP actually (sort of) happens, and is every bit a hilarious and awkward and full of crossed wires and random Torchwood-style craziness as, despite themselves, Jack and Ianto figure out how to live with each other.

Comment: Ianto is remarkable for many reasons, but one thing that has always stood out in the minds of many fans is how easily he was able to con his way into a position in Torchwood Three- as well as a position in Jack's life. He conned the con-man, and that takes skills. This fic is wonderful because it not only showcases those skills, but Jack's reactions to watching someone else succumb to them.

“This castle is quite lovely, though I imagine it would be extremely hard to heat in the winter, what with all of the concealed nooks and crannies,” she said.

invisible_lift posted while working on "A Hatful of Hollow." For a fairly simple premise, there's quite a lot going on here. You get glimpses of the mundane (for Torchwood, anyway) daily tasks at the hub, friendships among the team, and a very dark Jack indeed. Link at the top takes you to the 1st chapter; one below brings you to all six.

Jack kissed him gently, almost tentatively, letting his tongue dart in to taste but not to explore. It was a delicate, light sort of touching, but surprisingly pleasant. Ianto was seriously considering leaving the scanning equipment where it was and suggesting they make use of the boardroom table immediately when he felt something cold and hard pressed against the side of his head and heard a metallic click.

“Where is he?” Jack growled against his mouth.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is an amazing story. The plot is a wonderfully twisty time-travel mystery, with aliens and paradoxes and cross-time clues. All the characters are really well-done, and especially Martha and Mickey get a chance to shine. The author does a really good job guiding the reader through the complex plot and has also created some truly spectacular original characters. It's also a marvelous Jack/Ianto story, showing their relationship as strong and trusting. One of the best all-around pieces of Torchwood fan fiction I've read.

Bias aside, though, this is a really good sample of the genre, using the format as a frame and as inspiration, not as a crutch. The story begins during Ianto's first weeks at Torchwood Three and follows the progress of his relationships with the team--and Jack--up through the events of the first season. The "complaints" fit in nicely with Ianto's sense of humor--and sarcasm. It's a nicely well-written and subtle story.

The characters are well-done, and I was especially pleased to see Jack and Ianto interacting like the emotionally awkward men they both are, and equally pleased to see them acting so physically comfortable with each other. Theirs is an odd and difficult relationship to capture, and I think this story does it very well. In addition, the story itself is interesting and engaging and has a fascinating premise. It's also the kind of story that you'll really want to read twice, just to admire the new layers of meaning that show up on the second read. Really well done.

Commentary: There is something horrfyingly hilarious about his fic. On the one hand, there is nothing funny about being in a confined space for a long period of time. On the other hand, getting just a bit too comfotrable with your cellmate can be kind of funny. Jack's observations at the end are both touching and utterly Jack, and the punchline with have you laughing on the floor.
