Title: Give Me Pain if That's What's Real
Author: [livejournal.com profile] baka_sensei
Genre: Angst, Fix!It fic
Rating: Up to NC-17
Summary: I know I should be working on Revelations. However, first I had to exorcise the demon of CoE, and man, what a bitch of a demon it was. Ambiguous-fix!it fic. Title and some inspiration taken from Next to Normal. Remember Head!Six from Battlestar Galactica? Yeah, it's kind of like that.
Status: Complete
Length: ~12,00 words, 2 parts
Warnings: Series 3 spoilers
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is an amazing fic that takes place about a thousand or so years from the end of series 3. It's a pretty amazing exploration of the Jack/Ianto connection and, for being as short as it is, delves deeply into the mind of Jack Harkness when it comes to relationships and more specifically his relationship with Ianto. It will make you laugh, cry and all sorts of other things simultaneously.

Title: 25 Things Ianto Has Done and Is Capable of Doing Again
Author: [livejournal.com profile] strangecreatureand [livejournal.com profile] shinodabear
Genre: Character Study
Rating: PG-13
Summary: The authors like to joke about their wildly differing views on Mr Ianto Jones. But if they were to both write up lists of '25 Things Ianto Has Done and is Capable of Doing Again', they probably wouldn't be very different at all.
Status: Complete
Length: Two Parts, A and B
Warnings: All standard Torchwood ones
Comment: Ianto has- and likely always will be- the unique status of being a man with a mysterious past. Just as often as we have speculated about Jack's background, we have speculated about Ianto's- if not more so. These two pieces are a good way to illustrate why that is- because although we might argee on a few broader points, very little else is nailed down.

Title: Nortorious
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords
Genre: Action/Adventure, Suspense, Thriller
Rating: NC-17
Summary: An homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious, 1940s melodrama/suspense. Ianto goes undercover. Jack reacts.
Status: Complete
Length: 12,000 words in two parts
Warnings: Ianto/OFC
Comment: Ianto is remarkable for many reasons, but one thing that has always stood out in the minds of many fans is how easily he was able to con his way into a position in Torchwood Three- as well as a position in Jack's life. He conned the con-man, and that takes skills. This fic is wonderful because it not only showcases those skills, but Jack's reactions to watching someone else succumb to them.
Excerpt from fic:
“This castle is quite lovely, though I imagine it would be extremely hard to heat in the winter, what with all of the concealed nooks and crannies,” she said.

How subtle, Jack’s voice sounded in his ear. “It is, at that. Still, we wouldn’t want our Castle any other way, I’m sure. Ianto Jones,” he proffered his hand. “I’m with the Welsh Tourism Board.”

She laughed a little tinkly laugh and took his hand. “Alexandra Sebastian. I dabble in antiques – restoration, procurement, that sort of thing.” Her hand was soft but her grip was hard.

Title: When Even The Ashes Have Faded Away
Author: [livejournal.com profile] holdingoff
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Summary: He lets the grey show in his hair now. Each decade it slowly creeps back from his temples, around his ears to salt the waves of deep brown.
Status: Complete
Length: Oneshot
Warnings: Coda, Children of Earth
Comment or Excerpt from fic: It is beautiful. That's all i'm saying because I don't want to give too much away. It helps, in a way and it fills in some plot holes.

"I don't want to be frozen like the others. I'd prefer to be cremated if possible."

Jack quickly sat up, pushing away from the other man, "Why's that?"

Ianto's eyes reflected the scant light in the room, "I don't want you living with ghosts. Ashes can't haunt you, Jack."

Title: The Haunting of Woman Wept
Author: [livejournal.com profile] holdingoff
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Sequel to When Even The Ashes Have Faded Away. Woman Wept had been a beautiful planet. The single landmass suggested the image of a grieving woman, hence its name.
Status: Complete
Length: Oneshot
Warnings: Coda, Children of Earth
Comment or Excerpt from fic: I actually like this one better. I just love what Jack does in it. This part broke my heart to bits.

"I carve his words into the caves because they were private. No one enters the caves except me, so they are still private and they'll be here forever. Even after the universe is nothing more than darkness and ice, his words will still be there- only the ice."

Title: The Face of God (or, Ianto Hears a Who)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] alex51324
Genre: Humor/Genfic
Rating: G
Summary: "An entire intelligent civilization in a jam jar--It appears to be perfectly safe in there."
Status: Oneshot
Length: Oneshot
Warnings:
Mildest of mild spoilers for BBC site extras for "A Day in the Death"
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a deceptively fluffy little fic.  The premise is light and frothy, and perhaps more in keeping with the spirit of DW than Torchwood, but Ianto's concern and dedication are spot on for his character.  Overall, a charming, uplifting oneshot with a surprisingly well-developed alien world.  Based on a blink-and-you'll-miss-it line in one of the entries on the official site as backup for "A Day in the Death."

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is the fic you might know as "The one with the motorcycle". Unashamedly cute, and with a happy ending, this is one stroy you can always count on to bring a smile to your face.

Title: And Indeed There Will Be Time
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Mystery
Rating: R
Summary: In 1919, Harriet Derbyshire was killed while investigating the disappearance of Torchwood Four in Dublin. In 2009, UNIT pulls a dying man out of the Irish Sea with a one-word message: Torchwood. Martha joins up with Jack's team in Cardiff to track down the errant branch of the organization – before a time-traveling race of aliens can change the course of history as we know it.
Status: Complete
Length: 43,000 words
Warnings: None
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is an amazing story. The plot is a wonderfully twisty time-travel mystery, with aliens and paradoxes and cross-time clues. All the characters are really well-done, and especially Martha and Mickey get a chance to shine. The author does a really good job guiding the reader through the complex plot and has also created some truly spectacular original characters. It's also a marvelous Jack/Ianto story, showing their relationship as strong and trusting. One of the best all-around pieces of Torchwood fan fiction I've read.

Title: All These Days After Tomorrow
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rm
Genre: General
Rating: PG
Summary: "I'm having lunch with Alice today," Jack says, fastening his cufflinks.
Status: Complete
Length: Oneshot
Warnings: Spoilers for Series 3. If you are staying unspoiled, don't read it.
Comment or Excerpt from fic: I love how silent this story is, and it mostly in dialogue. A conversation between Jack and Ianto about her, if you don't know who she is already. Also talks about Jack not aging, which I found really lovely. If you're looking for a break from the smut and the angst and the fluff, here's a general Jack and Ianto for you, the kind I love. Not that all the others aren't good, it's just that I've already got past all that stuff. I know they have sex, they've had their angst, now I just like the general Jack/Ianto. This fic is set in Series 3 I think and we already know Jack/Ianto are together in it. There are no kisses to indicate they are and if you didn't already know they were in a relationship, you'd feel it. It's like it's just there. Okay then. Now i'm just not making sense.

"You always take this conversation so well," he says. It's ridiculously obvious that he's unhappy.

Ianto shrugs. "What am I supposed to do, exactly?"

"Be disturbed," Jack offers lightly, in a way that Ianto thinks is vastly cruel and unfair to all concerned.

"Sorry," he says, keeping his eyes on the road, "no interest in contributing to the family drama."

"No. Of course not. Always so calm, so even, our Ianto."

Ianto snorts. "We both know that's not true."

So I've been writing again, and I love this community and it's ability to give me fics that inspire me, and it made me sad that there has been a dearth of recs for a while. So I decided to haul into the vault of my personal favorites, check the master-list and see if they haven't been recced yet, and then rec which ones haven't until I run out. Because I love you guys!

Title: Death #7402
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hatofhornigold
Genre: Humor with a bit of smut thrown in
Rating: R
Summary: Jack has died many times. Inevitably, some of his deaths must have been kind of embarrassing.
Status: Complete
Length: One-shot - 370 words
Warnings: Naughtiness and accidental violence
Comment or Excerpt from fic: I couldn't stop laughing when I read this the first time. No, really. If you've watched our dear Jack on Dr. Who, you couldn't help but notice his tendency to hide things in inappropriate places... and I won't ruin it for you, but this fic just plays on that in a hilarious manner. The dialogue is brilliant and it's so in-character it'll make you want to jump up and down and squeal. :D

Title: Five complaints that Ianto Jones has thought about registering concerning Torchwood (and one that he did)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] strangecreature
Genre: Five Things, Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: R
Summary: The author describes the story as "Crashing around behind the scenes for a wide swath of the first season."
Status: Complete
Length: 4400 words
Warnings: None
Comment or Excerpt from fic: I admit, I'm a huge sucker for the "Five Things" format. Bias aside, though, this is a really good sample of the genre, using the format as a frame and as inspiration, not as a crutch. The story begins during Ianto's first weeks at Torchwood Three and follows the progress of his relationships with the team--and Jack--up through the events of the first season. The "complaints" fit in nicely with Ianto's sense of humor--and sarcasm. It's a nicely well-written and subtle story.

Title: Torchwood One Archive
Author: James aka [livejournal.com profile] zortified (Writing journal: [livejournal.com profile] gilascave)
Genre: Angst, Drama, Crossover
Rating: PG-15
Summary: Jack has returned to Torchwood and to Ianto. Ianto is determined to make the best of it but he knows it won't last forever. Their time together threatens to get even shorter when the Doctor shows up unexpectedly.
Status: Complete
Length: 11,500 words
Warnings: None
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a good, solid, plotty story. The characters are well-done, and I was especially pleased to see Jack and Ianto interacting like the emotionally awkward men they both are, and equally pleased to see them acting so physically comfortable with each other. Theirs is an odd and difficult relationship to capture, and I think this story does it very well. In addition, the story itself is interesting and engaging and has a fascinating premise. It's also the kind of story that you'll really want to read twice, just to admire the new layers of meaning that show up on the second read. Really well done.

Title: If Not Wisely
Author: [livejournal.com profile] liadan14
Genre: Angst
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Ianto keeps count. He hardly knows why--it's not like it matters, it's not like Jack cares, it's not like he wouldn't sound like a creepy stalker if he were to say something like, "I remember our seventeenth kiss. It was in the archives."
Status: Complete
Length: ~9,500 words in 3 parts
Warnings: None

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This story snuck up on me. I started reading it and certainly thought it was good, but as the story unfolded I found myself absolutely drawn in and held fast. It's beautifully written, showing Ianto as the more-than-slightly screwed up person he is without taking him out of character. The build-up to the end was very well-done, and the end itself was a perfect grace note to a wonderful story.

Title: Conversational Japanese
Author: [livejournal.com profile] gilascave
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Ianto and Tosh have been kidnapped. This is how they cope.
Warnings: Imprisonment
Commentary: There is something horrfyingly hilarious about his fic. On the one hand, there is nothing funny about being in a confined space for a long period of time. On the other hand, getting just a bit too comfotrable with your cellmate can be kind of funny. Jack's observations at the end are both touching and utterly Jack, and the punchline with have you laughing on the floor.

Genre:  angst, romance
Rating:  PG-13
Summary: Jack discovers that he can't just take up where he left off.
Status: Oneshot, Complete
Warnings: Flashbacks to torture
Comment:Jack has a fair bit of issues to work out after returning, something which we only got hints and glimmers of during series two. Plenty of extremely talented authors have gone about working this through against the backdrop of the earlier portion of the series, as well as working through the notion of that first date Jack and Ianto had. She does and wonder, lovely, haunting job of weaving them both through the first four episodes of Torchwood.

Title: Anodyne
Author:  os4a2no9
Genre:  Closest to hurt/comfort, but that's not quite right
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: "Ianto’s numb, and he likes it that way"
Status: Complete, 2335 words
Warnings: Sex and heartbreak
Comment: Set post Cyberwoman and Countrcide, Ianto is trying to come to terms with losing his girlfriend *and* nearly being eaten by cannibals. This fic is one of the few that I have read that actually explores how horrific and traumatic this would be for Ianto and appreciates what anyone would have to do to stay sane. Really heartbreaking and genuine with some Jack and Ianto soapy shower fun thrown in there too. Best fic I have read this year so far [and believe me, I don't get out much].

"Time passed in Torchwood as time always did: noisily, messily, and with a great deal of shouting. He was numb to most of it."

Title: Get Jones
Author: [personal profile] valderys
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 5,342
Notes: AU for the Age of Steel Whoniverse, this is just one take on what other paths Ianto and Jack may have taken :)
Summary: JACK: Ianto Jones, born August 19th 1983. Able student but not exceptional, one minor conviction for shoplifting in your teens. But what if crime had suited Ianto?
Commentary: What if, indeed? This is an amazing, noir-esque story about a Ianto who manages to still be the loyal, stubborn, intelligent man we've all come to know and love, even as he steals from alt!Torchwood. His meeting with Jack (presumably not immortal and still a Time Agent) and subsequent moments are well-done and just plain fun to read.
Excerpt: “What,” Ianto snarls, teeth grinding, “The bloody fuck do you think you’re doing?”

And the man laughs. “I’m robbing you, of course. What does it look like? Nice move, by the way.”

American accent. Ianto stares, not letting his arm waver, disbelief warring with fury. “And what makes you think I’m going to let that happen?”

“You’ve got no choice?”

Ianto cocks his head and raises an eyebrow. The man’s arm isn’t wavering either, and he’s pointing an old-fashioned handgun, a Webley, Ianto thinks, of all things, right at Ianto’s forehead. It crosses his mind that an old-fashioned gun like that might be slower than his own, although, probably, unfortunately, not slow enough.

“No chance,” he says, and knows it to be true. He doesn’t want to die in such a pointless encounter, but he will, if he has to. The goods are important enough for that.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: I have an unhealthy obsession with Smoking!Ianto. Yes, Ianto does smoke here. I don't want to put anything that gives the fic away. You just have to read it. This fic is one of my favorites atm. It doesn't have any kisses, teasing, sex and all that. Just talking and smoking which also goes for Jack. The ending is lovely. Anyways, here's the excerpt:

Ianto set his elbows on the boards around the rink. A group of teenage girls in shiny, puffy coats shrieked by, clinging to each other and drawing less attention than they wanted.

“Torchwood.”

“Ah.” Jack stubbed the cigarette out on the edge of the board. “Torchwood and I are a package deal.”

“I know.”
