Speaking of which…

Jack offered his daughter a smile. The worried frown so like her papa lined her cherub face when she tilted her head; her many dark braids a curtain across her blue eyes. She had a very adult frown on her pink mouth and it was ruined by the thumb she was sucking.

"What is it, Rose?" Jack patted a spot besides him and she dutifully hopped up besides him.

She studied him with that little frown. The thumb came out with a pop. She laid her head on his right arm.

"Are you still hurting?" Rose offered a water bottle with a bent straw and watched as Jack took a sip.

"No," Jack sighed happily as Rose snuggled closer. He flicked a finger at her braids and watched her giggle. His side was extremely sore, but he wouldn't miss the vibration of her joy against his ribs for the world. And to think he had doubts about having her. Rose was a happy accident that precipitated everything good in his life.
