It took Ianto nearly dying for Jack to come to his senses.
Up until then it had been so very simple. He’d come back from the Doctor knowing that there was nothing he could do about his immortality and that it was part of him until such time as it vanished as mysteriously as it had arrived. Knowing that he was doomed to live his immortal life amongst mortals, Jack had known that he couldn’t even consider a long-term relationship with anyone. He’d broken the news to Ianto as gently as he knew how and had been relieved to find that the younger man accepted his decision quietly. Of course it was always difficult to tell what Ianto was thinking, but he didn’t seem to be too grief-stricken and after a couple of weeks mentioned in passing that he was seeing someone.
Jack had been just a tiny bit… well, disconcerted was probably the best word, that Ianto had moved on from him so effortlessly. While he hoped that he wasn’t too conceited about the matter, he knew that he and Ianto had had a pretty intense relationship for a while. Purely physical, of course, since Jack was too experienced to give his heart easily and Ianto was still recovering from the debacle with Lisa, but they had given one another a lot of pleasure. Jack had thought that Ianto was a lot more emotionally involved with him, which was why he had felt so guilty about ending things, but now he realised that he’d underestimated the Welshman yet again.
He met Ianto’s girlfriend the one time when they had all been out for a drink. Ianto had said that he was meeting Anwen but had promised to swing by for one drink. Jack had had to admit that Anwen had turned out to be a stunner; a tall, leggy blonde bombshell with exquisite fashion sense and a dry sense of humour that had had the rest of the Team laughing in minutes after they had met her. She had been intelligent, articulate and well-read, quick to match wits with Jack and discuss the latest series on wartime Britain that was showing on UK History. Owen had wanted her, Tosh had liked her, Gwen had looked daggers at her when Rhys had jumped up to give her his seat and Jack…. Jack had liked her a lot and hoped he would never see her again.
