"So why are you here?" Martha eventually asked when she realised that no-one else was going to take the plunge.
The Doctor sighed. "There's a... situation.... I know how to stop it, but... I can't do it alone.... The reason I came to Jack is because I need someone I know can kill." There was a collective intake of breath around the table and he hunched down even further in his seat...
"So you need someone to play the heavy for you."
"Jack-" Tosh and Gwen said in unison, their anxiety palpable. Ianto didn't say anything but Jack noted the way his hand tightened around his mug.
"I don't think the Doctor would come to me unless he really, really had to," Jack said mildly, and was guiltily pleased by the twitch that provoked. "I'll be all right. Hard to kill, remember?"
"You're just as easy as anyone else to kill, Jack," Tosh said in reproof. "You come back, but you still die the way everyone else does. And we have no guarantee that whatever brings you back won't fail one day."
Jack inclined his head in agreement, but his eyes were on Ianto. Ianto's eyes were bleak and his face was at it's most impassive. 'Jack would agree with you if you said the sun rose in the west.' The bitter words Gwen had repeated had the ring of truth and Jack realised he might have been too quick to think that Ianto was breaking off their relationship because he didn't want to continue it. He might have believed that he had a rival he had no hope of winning against. Jack would have to make him realise that there wasn't any such problem.
