Ashes and Dust by Blucougar57

Title: Ashes and Dust
Author: Blucougar57
Genre: Angst, Drama, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: Adult
Summary: The usual Christmas celebrations are turned on their head for the Torchwood team when a seemingly random attack devastates one of their own.
Status: WIP
Length: 6 chapters
Warnings: Rape, assault, graphic violence
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This fic hurts to read, and yet it's so incredibly compelling. A lot of fics deal with the concept of Jack hurting Ianto; this fic does it the other way around, and boy, is it a whammy. Jack is utterly devastated in this fic, and the author writes it very convincingly. I'm actually kind of sad that this isn't finished, but intrigued to see where it will go especially with a Jack who's dealing with the repercussions of rape, and how that will affect his relationship with Ianto. It's very, very clear in this fic that Jack and Ianto love each other, but are dealing with a huge misunderstanding on top of the fact that Jack is traumatized and in an incredible amount of pain. It also has Kathy Swanson, who's written very well as a concerned detective just trying to do her job, and who approaches what has happened to Jack with a compassionate professionalism that is very desperately needed, as the Torchwood team are far too close to Jack to offer that.

Title: Far From Perfect
Author: Otherhawk
Genre: Sci fi, Adventure
Rating: T (Suitable for teens, 13 years and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor suggestive adult themes.)
Summary: Set midseason one. After a difficult day, Ianto and Jack go out for a a nice, friendly drink that may or may not be something more. What could possibly go wrong? Warning for slash and violence. Chapter 4 Journeys, arguments and making plans.
Status: WIP
Length: Four chapters.
Warnings: Violence and homophobia
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Far From Perfect is that rare slash fic that deals with the subject of homophobia. It's set mid season one, when most of us suspect that the attraction between Jack and Ianto has started to grow. I could easily see this fitting in before TKKS, the awkward transition before consummation which is made more awkward by the fact that this level of same-sex attraction is painfully new for Ianto. At the same time there's a very obvious culture clash going on between Jack and Ianto that is really interesting to read. Jack's 51st century mores, past and darkness contrasted with Ianto's youth, comparative innocence and 21st century socialization.

Title: Scylla and Charybdis, Five Variations on an Inspiration: Jack Harkness
Author: Salieri
Genre: Angst, Romance
Rating: PG-13
Summary: None given by the author.
Status: Complete
Length: 3,000 words.
Warnings: obliqueness, twistibrainedness
Comment or Excerpt from fic: It's really hard to describe this fic. The author did it in one when they said it was "twisty". It's a time travel story, and lovely and angsty and ephemeral - one of those ones where things loop back in on themselves. It's Jack and Ianto, and it's poetic and a bit like a gaping wound.

“You look so young,” Ianto says, not evading the question, really, although Natan can’t follow the logic.

Still, though, that makes Natan smile. “Yeah?” Almost against his will, his gaze drifts over Ianto’s shoulder to check out his reflection again.

“Younger than me, even.”

Something in Ianto’s voice, a sort of puzzled wonder, calls his attention back. Natan asks, “How old are you, anyway?” It’s hard to tell. Ianto’s face is young but his eyes are old.

“Twenty-eight.” A pause. “Three thousand.”

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a really good piece of BDSM kink, and while it's porn, it manages to be much more than that at the same time. It's hot, and angsty and sweet.

Comment: Blucougar's Another World is one of my favorite Torchwood fics to date. There's a lot to this story. It's long, and extremely well written. This fic manages to be both a character piece and to have an exceptional plot - usually stories tend one way or the other. It's also a crossover with Law and Order: Criminal Intent, but don't let that scare you away. The fic strikes a fair balance between the two shows, with perhaps a bit more focus on the Torchwood team. I'm not familiar with the Law and Order fandom, really, but I found it easy to slip into this fic. And of course it's Jack/Ianto, heaped on top of a mighty serving of angst as Jack tries to cope with the fallout from the year that never was, while leading his team and trying to catch a monster. And Ianto's there for him, which is written in a really sweet, believable way.
