"Ianto Jones?"

The assured American accent made Ianto turn automatically. The speaker was a man, about his height, with amused blue eyes and a flashing grin. That expression was being displayed for his benefit right now, and Ianto began to relax as he returned the stranger's smile.

"Captain Jack Harkness," the other introduced himself, holding out a hand for Ianto to shake. "I'll be your mentor for your first few months here at Torchwood One, until you find your feet."

In the normal course of things, a comment like that would have made Ianto immediately conscious of his shoes (bought on a student budget, but polished until he could see his reflection in the toes). Right now, however, it seemed the most natural thing in the world for him to shake Jack's hand. "Good to meet you, sir." The 'sir' slipped out without Ianto's direct intervention, but it somehow seemed appropriate to call his mentor that.

Captain Harkness' grin widened a fraction at Ianto's words. "A pleasure to meet you too. Here, follow me. Yvonne wants to give you and the other new recruits her welcome speech."

Captain Harkness strode away, letting Ianto catch up with him as he lead the way into the lift and further into Torchwood One.
