EXCERPT:
Jack drank his shot and winced as it burned his throat. It was the sixth he’d consumed and it still burned. It doesn’t get better, he thought morosely, it never fucking gets better. But this was his nights off now. Trolling around in pubs instead of spending his time at home…the home he could no longer bear to step into.
He held up his glass to signal the bartender, then noticed someone looking at him from across the bar. A woman, blonde, smiling at him. She was obviously drunk, but fuck it all, she was cute and Jack needed…he knew what he needed, but he wasn’t going to get that so this woman would have to do.
He approached her, “Hi, I’m…Chris.” Not Jack. She wouldn’t say it right. “You...live around here?” a crap chat-up line he knows, but she doesn’t seem to care. Jack knows how that feels.
