Title: The Waters and the Wild
Author: [livejournal.com profile] soera
Genre:  Dark, Alternate Canon
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: The Torchwood team comprises Jack, Owen, Tosh and Gwen. They've just encountered the faeries of Small Worlds. Unfortunately, they've also caught the eye of another type of faerie, and he's rather intrigued by Jack.
Status: Complete
Length: 3
Violent Imagery, Sex, Torture, Implications of Stockholm Syndrome
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Probably my second all-time favourite Jack/Ianto fic, teetering right on the edge of being my favourite. It's marvelously dark and chilling, while still being beautiful. The style is brilliant and it's a very enchanting read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone so long as they're not adverse to violence and dark fics.

Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is a brilliant fic that is recc'd at [livejournal.com profile] longliveianto  where I first found it, and I thought it should go here, as it gives us so much hope after the disaster that was the-series-that-shall-not-be-named. This is another fic that could be classed as canon if people wanted it to, in the words of the Doctor "Time can be rewritten."

The man who shouldn’t be looked up through eyes that were nearly swollen shut at the man who wasn’t a man, smiled a smile that could only be described as ‘terrifying’ and shouted, “Doctor!  What brings you here?  No, wait let me guess.  Um - Daleks?  No, no we got all of those.  Cybermen?  No, the last of those died when we killed Y-Ianto’s girlfriend.” The Doctor could hear the slight stutter even through the slurring and wondered what had happened before Jack went on. “No, no, no!  I’ve got it!  The 456, are they back?  Do you want to know how I did it?  Or did someone tell you what I did and you’ve come to put me down?” The Doctor flinched.

At this last, the Doctor saw Jack’s eyes light up with a kind of horrifying hope.  The Doctor realized that Jack was in worse shape than he thought if he believed for an instant that the Time Lord would actually kill him.

This is one awesome story, read this if you love stories where Ianto lives :D

Angst, Fluff-ish, Doctor Who Crossover

Comment or Excerpt from fic:
This is a story that kinda makes CoE worth it :/, and that's hard for me to say because I'm a denier of CoE. This isn't a CoE fix-it, but it's as close as possible to one. This is really good, I'm totally hooked, I'm always anxiously awaiting updates :D

Title: Night Monsters
Author: [livejournal.com profile] qthelights
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Public drunken sex
Genre: Smut, PWP
Summary: The night isn't only for monsters. Shameless pwp.
Commentary: This fic is wonderful. It's convincing, it's humor-tinted, it's hot. It's a showcase of a Jack and Ianto who are very much comfortable with each other. It's a stolen moment between two men who don't get such things often enough. And... why are you still here?

Title: Ianto's Diary
Author: [livejournal.com profile] szm
Rating: PG-15
Genre: Angst, Character Study
Status: Complete
Length: One-shot
Warnings: Character death, post-CoE
Spoilers: Through CoE
Summary: Jack finds and continues with Ianto's diary.
Commentary: This is one of the first post-CoE stories I read, and among the first to be written. It's angry, and greiving- and, as it's written from Jack's perspective, it rings completely true.

Title: Heaven in Hell's Demesne
Author: [livejournal.com profile] crystalfic
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete
Length: ~800 words
Warnings: Torture, violence
Summary: Sometimes, all it takes to call you back from a nightmare is a familiar voice.
Commentary: Anyone who takes a good look at my recs can tell that I am a sucker for fics dealing with the YTNW. This is a short fic, and it deals with many the familiar tropes of the subgenre, but with such wonderful characterizations that I couldn't help but bookmark it. Jack's humor, Ianto's understated care, it all shines through with perfect clarity.

Title: Questions
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kinkerbelle13
Genre: Angst, relationship, romance, AU
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete
Length: ~2600
Warnings: Canon character death
Summary: Basically, Jack and Owen have a conversation.
Commentary: Don't let the summary fool you; this fic continues long after the conversation between Owen and Jack is over, both chronologically and narratively. It's starts with one question Owen asks, and it takes a while for Jack to find an answer to it. In the meantime, Torchwood marches on, the world nearly ends a few times, and through it all, Jack wonders.

Title: World Enough, and Time
Author: [livejournal.com profile] soraismus
Genre: angst, romance, mystery
Rating: PG
Length: ~2,400
Status: Complete
Warnings: Character death of the only sort of temporary kind.
Summary: A man gets so many chances.
Commentary: If you take a look at the tags, you'll notice that we at [community profile] janto_recshave this thing about giving Ianto more time. We make him immortal. We make him a timelord. We have him die of old age, or at least in his thirties. World Enough, and Time is a sweet little piece that plays with the idea of Ianto returning again and again. As [personal profile] taffimaisaid in the comments, "For a story that had Ianto die about fifteen times, this is really adorable."
Excerpt: Jack's died ten thousand times; he's only lived once. As far as he knows, as far as he's ever experienced, only one of those things makes him different from every other human.

Title: The Epitaph
Author: Otrame ([livejournal.com profile] otrame)
Genre: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Many years in the future, Jack visits Ianto's grave.
Status: Complete
Length: 894 words
Warnings: Character Death (very past tense)
Comment: You've all heard "the end is where we start from". What you may not have heard is another line from Little Gidding T.S. Eliot penned: "Every poem an epitaph". That is the line that came to me while reading this fic. For something so short, it packs a lot of punch. There's an awful lot of sorrow and grief; there's also acceptance, and grace. There's beauty. I could go on and on about how powerfully touching this fic is until my commentary was longer than it was, but essentially, the reason I found this so memorable is because it's a memorial. Not only to Ianto, but to everything we saw between him and Jack.

Title: Give Me Pain if That's What's Real
Author: [livejournal.com profile] baka_sensei
Genre: Angst, Fix!It fic
Rating: Up to NC-17
Summary: I know I should be working on Revelations. However, first I had to exorcise the demon of CoE, and man, what a bitch of a demon it was. Ambiguous-fix!it fic. Title and some inspiration taken from Next to Normal. Remember Head!Six from Battlestar Galactica? Yeah, it's kind of like that.
Status: Complete
Length: ~12,00 words, 2 parts
Warnings: Series 3 spoilers
Comment or Excerpt from fic: This is an amazing fic that takes place about a thousand or so years from the end of series 3. It's a pretty amazing exploration of the Jack/Ianto connection and, for being as short as it is, delves deeply into the mind of Jack Harkness when it comes to relationships and more specifically his relationship with Ianto. It will make you laugh, cry and all sorts of other things simultaneously.

Title: Mutual Service 'Verse
Author: [livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot
Genre: AU, Angst, Romance
Rating: PG-13
Summary: When some misplaced technology triggers a custom-coded lockdown, Torchwood quickly realises the quickest way to open up the Hub again is to get the program's creator to shut it off. The only problem is that Ianto Jones is dead.
Status: Each story is complete, but the series is ongoing.
Length: 4 separate stories in 6 parts
Warnings: Death... emo-ness? Boy kissing and hints towards sexual themes.
Comment or Excerpt from fic:
This fic is absolutely BRILLIANT. It is very well written, and [livejournal.com profile] phaetonschariot packs an emotional punch without becoming melodramatic. The premise for this fic centers around the glove and a "what-if Ianto had actually acted on his suicidal/depressed feelings" and is incredibly well-done; not something I'd ever thought of before. Everyone is fabulously in character- Ianto is the sad, stoic Ianto we saw from series 1, underestimated and unappreciated but resilient, Jack is the guilt-riddled immortal who feels both responsible for and flabbergasted by the people under his command- and the writing style is simple but fraught with implicit emotion and illumination of the characters. Morbidly funny, it takes They Keep Killing Suzie and turns it into a story I would have liked just as much, if not more (which is saying something, since TKKS is definitely in my top 3 Torchwood episodes). I can't say enough good things about this series; it completely floored me, intrigued me, and left me begging for more!

As the author writes, the title is taken from the suicide note of Charlotte Perkins Gilman: "Human life consists in mutual service. No grief, pain, misfortune, or 'broken heart,' is excuse for cutting off one's life while any power of service remains. But when all usefulness is over, when one is assured of an unavoidable and imminent death, it is the simplest of human rights to choose a quick and easy death in place of a slow and horrible one."

Author: [livejournal.com profile] adina_atl
Genre:  angst, romance
Rating:  PG-13
Summary: Jack discovers that he can't just take up where he left off.
Status: Oneshot, Complete
Warnings: Flashbacks to torture
Comment:Jack has a fair bit of issues to work out after returning, something which we only got hints and glimmers of during series two. Plenty of extremely talented authors have gone about working this through against the backdrop of the earlier portion of the series, as well as working through the notion of that first date Jack and Ianto had. She does and wonder, lovely, haunting job of weaving them both through the first four episodes of Torchwood.

Title: First Time for Everything
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] criccieth
Genre:  backstory, angst, drama, ect
Rating:  NC-17
Summary: All relationships have their stages and their first moments
Status: Incomplete, looooong
Warnings: Sex, domestic abuse, suicide attempts
Comment: This isn't the sort of background I normally buy for Ianto, but the details and emotions are so vivid here that it's hard not to buy it. The story is shaping up to be complicated and full of interesting interactions between Jack and Ianto, some of which looks like it has/is going to involve a sort of time travel. Updates are long in coming, but seeing as the length of each section is ridiculous, I'm not going to complain too much.

For two years Ianto has been doing his best to forget, to bury the memories. And now, if Harkness does turn out to want what Oliver wanted…It won’t be the same, he tells himself firmly. Won’t be trapped. Won’t be a prisoner this time. As soon as she’s better, we’ll leave. Slowly, his hands stop shaking. Lisa, he reminds himself. It’s for Lisa. Whatever it takes, remember? Doesn’t matter what it costs. You can handle it. It’s for her. But he feels so cold.

Title: Repair In Route
Author: Otrame
Genre: Angst, Dark, Drama, Hurt/Comfort
Rating: NC-17
Other/Implied Pairings: Owen/Tosh, Jack/Doctor (kind of one-sided), Martha/Doctor (also a tad one-sided), Master/Jack (noncon)
Summary: The Year-That-Never-Was left open wounds. Healing them would take time. But of course, they had time
Status: WIP
Length: Multipart
Word Count: Ongoing
Warnings: non-con, character death, suicide, mental illness, torture
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Many, many people comment on the lack of focus Torchwood hason Jack's recovery from what was probably a not-too-pleasant experience, not to mention repairing his relationship with the Doctor, who was outright mean to Jack for the first two episodes of the Master arc. Most of these people focus on his recovery in the context of Torchwood Season Two, in codas for KKBB, Meat, and Exit Wounds. But Otrame takes a different spin- after all, the TARDIS is a time travel machine. Martha, Jack, and the Doctor could have taken a trip or two in between the Master's death and Jack choosing the return to his team in Cardiff. This explores how the four of them (Martha, Jack, the Doctor, and the TARDIS) would heal in this situation. Combined with some frankly brilliant theories about what, exactly, the Time Agency did this is something I'd highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of dark fics. One word of caution- although she updates fairly regularly, this is a WIP, and they are all still very broken, although Jack does seem to have the worst of it right now.

Memories are just stray neuro-chemical pulses in the matrix of my brain, and if a Time Lord can’t control a few stray neuro-chemical pulses in his own brain… But of course I can. I can allow a few to remain. Just enough so I know what happened. Put the rest in deep storage, only called up when absolutely necessary. And I refuse to believe that there will ever be a time I need to remember

Jack, sitting in an enormous puddle of blood holding a corpse in his arms. The blood has clotted, the serum separated and spread out from the original stain on the floor. The thinner places have already dried; the corpse is ice cold. Jack’s eyes are dead.

You start here. The universe is this way. Reset all variables to current conditions. The past is not a real thing. You are alive, in a healthy body. Your TARDIS is healing. You can go on from here.

Comment or Excerpt from fic:Ianto asked if Jack wanted to come for lunch, and Jack said yes, he did, thank you very much, and so they went to lunch. They went to a small bistro, and ordered sandwiches. While they ate, Ianto asked Jack about his fears of aliens and scary movies. Jack made an embarrassed sound, and shook his head.

"I know they're not real," he said when they sat outside in a small café, trying to explain. "But, I don't know, they just seem so real on the screen, and I just get so into it, like this life..."

He fell quiet, not quite sure what he'd been about to say, but certain he really shouldn't say it.

"Like there should be more to this life?" Ianto suggested.

Jack grinned ruefully.

"Aliens. Maybe," he said and looked up at the sky above.

Title: Just Like a Man
Author: [livejournal.com profile] butterflycell
Genre: AU, Angst, Drama, Romance, Hurt/Comfort

Summary: Jack's come home from his trip with the Doctor and Martha to find something out of the ordinary in the Hub.
Length: Multi-chapter / 15 TOTAL
Word Count: ~ 33,556
Warnings: Post-Torchwood 1x13 "End of Days," but set at the beginning of Torchwood season 2, a bit of Abuse & Violence
Comment or Excerpt from fic: So another fic based on what happens after Jack comes back from his trip with the Doctor post-TW 1x13. It's only in the first chapter, but we're promised 15 chapters... well, 17 if you count the two two-parter chapters separately... Rating: R
Other/Implied Pairings: implied past: Jack/John, Jack/OCs
Summary: Jack got a message on his wrist strap, and we all know 'That Never Beeps' - this can only mean one thing. But what will that mean for Jack and Ianto's relationship?
Length: Multi-chapter, Story 3 / 16 TOTAL
Word Count: ~ 24,219
Warnings: general spoilers for Torchwood especially 2x01 "KKBB," minor reference to TW 2x03 "To The Last Man," implied Violence (past & present), Torture (past)
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Sequel to Just Like a Man immediately following from the two-parter interlude Dizzy. I was right! Angst-central, here we come! So, based on TW 2x01 "KKBB," but not exactly the same. John is darker and the fic is angstier than canon, but the fic takes us behind-the-scenes through Janto's relationship and how it's being rebuilt (slowly...), so... *shrugs and grins*

Title: Sky Blue and Black

Length: Multi-chapter, Story 4 / 13 TOTAL
Word Count: ~ 19,126
Warnings: general spoilers until and post-Torchwood especially 2x01 "KKBB," Violence
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Sequel to Danger Zone. Okay, so I thought Danger Zone was angst-central, but it's got nothing on this! So, John's gone, but leaves behind one team member hurt and on the verge of dying, and it's not who you think! This fic isn't as action-oriented as the last, but it's all emotional and angsty and just makes me cry! *sniffles*

Warnings: spoilers for Torchwood S1 & S2, Doctor Who 1x02, Character Death
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Sequel to Sky Blue and Black and fourth (also probably the last) in the series. You know, I should've known that there will always be something more angsty than what's already been written... =___=;; So, rather than comparing fics on the angst scale, I'll just say that this is one of the most ANGSTY and HEARTBREAKINGLY PAINFUL pieces I've EVER read and...! Status: Work In Progress
Length: Multi-chapter / ?? TOTAL
Word Count: TBC
Warnings: references to Doctor Who's "Last of the Time Lords," Post-Torchwood 2x01 "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," multiple Character deaths, Dark, Violence, Torture, Suicide/Self-harm, Smut
Comment or Excerpt from fic: We all know that Jack suffered on the Valiant, but I always did wish that they spend more time on the lasting effects it had on Jack, but I guess I can't get everything I want and besides, that's what fancfiction is for! *laughs* Anyway, this is [livejournal.com profile] andromeda05's take on the lasting effects of Jack's captivity. It's a heartbreaking fic and as stated in the warnings, this is no light-hearted story, so bear that in mind!

They had every right to be angry, they’d been betrayed... They’d waited days for him to come back, only for him to disappear again. They’d been forced to learn how to survive on their own... they were more cohesive than ever. Stronger than ever before, but once again, Jack found himself at the end of their teamwork and anger.

On the other hand, Jack had equally every right to be angry and bitter. He’d originally been betrayed by the people who were now angry at him-and... he hadn’t quite gotten over the fact they’d killed him. Then, he’d gone... with the Doctor, only to be told he was wrong and spend the next year being called a freak and monster. He didn’t fault them for their human emotions... But Jack wasn’t the man who’d left them five months ago-a year for him. He considered himself strong and resilient, but he wasn’t unbreakable. And as he watched them all glare at him... he felt it for the first time-he was breaking.

Title: These Five Kisses
Author: [livejournal.com profile] exileonmain

Summary: The things Jack remembers when he dies.
Length: One-shot
Word Count: ~ 850
Warnings: set during Torchwood 2x01 "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," Character death (temporary)
Comment or Excerpt from fic: Oh this is bittersweet, but more towards the sweet side! Jack's thoughts while reviving after John throws him off the building and leaves. Through the blackness of death and memories, Jack's only peace and comfort comes from remembering kisses made memorable by extraordinary people! :)

Twenty minutes. Give or take.

The process of his body putting itself back together after he died takes twenty minutes depending on how he died. There was rarely any peace anymore when he died. There was black and memories that taunted him from afar, but peace was a thing of the past...

He saw many things in the blank time that he was dead. Sometimes he saw memories... The second the bones started to sync together, the muscles stretched back into place, he was remembering kisses. None were particularly special to the naked eye, but perhaps it wasn't the kisses themselves that were memorable, moreover the people he shared them with.

Length: One-shot
Word Count: ~ 2,326
Warnings: Post-Torchwood 2x13 "Exit Wounds," implied Characters deaths
Comment or Excerpt from fic: I don't really have any comment for this fic... atleast, the first part, anyway... The second part, though... *SQUEE*

Which wasn't to mean that he didn't love or was using Ianto because he couldn't be with Gwen. Oh no... Everything about Ianto undid him in ways that he hadn't felt in all his life; much like Gwen, he had a hold on him in a way that he couldn't explain...

No. He wasn't using Ianto. He truly did love him... he completed him in ways that Gwen couldn't... and it was more than sex. It was as though the two of them had their lassoes around his heart... yet he didn't feel torn. His heart belonged to both of them and whether they knew that or not was irrelevant. Even though Gwen was married, in some way, she belonged to him. In his heart, she was his and Ianto was his in all other ways that a lover could be. He had Gwen once, he had her for a brief, passion filled moment, but he had Ianto for the rest. He knew the man was up to the challenge. There wasn't a need for words - Jack knew how Ianto felt.
